Gain structure question....

edited April 2008 in General Discussion
Hey, I'm new here (real dumb) and I am wondering about the gain structure setup.
I thought I was ready to go till I came here. I have my laptop linked and it works. I set the 260 up how I have my now repaced equioment (eq, comp, x-over) and thought I was ready
I have read all the read first...
It reads to play a pink noise cd? in a channel?
I have a A&H mixer w/ built in pink noise, I can just use that, right? Run it at 0db on the main out L/R meters ?

Second, if I set the gains (on 260) at 0db, why do I have to hit the amps with no load to check for cliping? If I am at unity (0db) on the meters on the board and go into the dbx 260 set at 0db, what more needs be done? I asume the 260 is as or more acurate than my current signal chain when it comes to 0db setings.

Sorry if it is something I missed. I have run the system full out for many years and do not feel the need to REDUCE the gain on the amps (they are fully up). I have only seen the clip light come on my sub amp a few times when really running hot. The PeakPlus on my (now replaced) DBX 2031Q has always been the \"wall\".
Thanks for your help :?:

ps-this is a commercial audio pa system (live bands)

    Yes

Since you will force the amps to clip, you don't want to damage your speakers since clipped pink noise can do real damage.

Headroom. While you may lose a little volume at a given voltage, you will gain volume on musical peaks. Cleaner, clearer, better. You could just as well say that you don't use a limiter, because it limits your output. That is true, but that is not the whole story.

  • Thanks for the welcome!
Makes sense. I am learning. It seems like I know less now, but some how, I feel I will get better results. Thank you!
  • Hi Todd Zila
    I'm new here (real dumb)

    You are NOT dumb
We are all learning and we all, at one stage in our lives, had the same level of knowledge that you have. We have just spent years learning about sound systems.

Learning is the key, and that is what you are doing here!!!. Learning
    Well done. :):)

  • Thanks, It is working great. gui and all.
I def have the basics of the unit down now.
I did not do extensive stuff. Just set all the settings how I would with individual units and bam... it worked great!
    Thanks a ton!
