Does anyone have any extra capacitors used to solve the 'dead-serial' problem that we could buy and have them shipped overnight? AMX is refusing to send us any to repair in the field. We've ordered them online before, we are now out and had two masters just fail yesterday.

I'd be happy to send you some gratis, but sadly I'm in Australia and there's no chance they'll get there overnight.

eBay could actually be your friend in this instance. I just did a quick search and it looks like there's a few vendors in the US who could probably overnight you the parts if you don't have access to a local electronics supplier.

I should note the crisis has been averted - had a client not pay his bill, so we still have an extra NI that we can use as a backup until we get some parts. Good thing or else our client's with dead masters would not have been happy!

You don't have to use surface mount capacitors when you replace these.
Whilst it is best to use what AMX specify there is no problem using something else when in a fix, as long as the replacements ratings are equal to or better than those specified.
The essential parameters are that it MUST be 10uf, it must be at least 35v, it must be electrolytic and it must fit into the space.
If you can it's best to get a high temperature rating, and a low ESR rating. Whilst these two are not essential they will increase the longevity of your repair (possibly indefinitely).

Last month I was caught out without any tools or spare parts and over an hours drive from home.
I took a 10 minute drive to the local electronics store, bought a cheap soldering iron, solder and a radial base 10uf 63v capacitor. It capacitor was 63 cents.

We have these guys here in Australia and I find them very good, maybe worth a try?

I think that's a pretty common value. You should be able to pick one up at any Radio Shack also.
