TPI/4 with Smart Actalyst - not working

Has anyone had experience with Smart's Actalyst overlays as the touch interface on a TPI/4?

I have designed a 46" touch panel, but the Smart overlay doesn't work.

The TPI/4 is brand new, and has all current firmware.

I've selected the SmartTech driver.

The Actalyst comes with a USB adapter cable (9 pin to USB with a lump in the middle) and when connecting that to a laptop with their software works fine.

I've also tried a serial cable with and without null modem cable to the TPI 9 pin.

I can make the TPI/4 work with a USB mouse and over VNC so it's not the program.

Are there more than one SmartTech protocols?
