Protobuf Documentation

Anybody ever had any experience of using protobuf messages? I've got a machine that returns all of its data in straight text apart from the alarm messages, which are base64 protobuf. Most of the documentation I've looked at don't actually deal with the nuts and bolts of encoding/decoding the messages.
