GNX4 Up/Down effects select switches, need replacement
Anyone know where I can get hold of the Micro-Switches, or what
Make/Brand they are, that are soldered to the circuit board . They no longer respond, the plastic arrow \"Up/Down\" switch covers with contact pegs to activate the micro-switches are intact. Any info would be appreciated. FYI yes, I'm qualified in Electric/Electronic service and thought I'd save time before I searched all over myself.
Thanks
Rick

No sweat dood...good luck...I hope you can get your rig working great. I know I'd be uber-bummed if my GNX was done for...in fact, a year or two ago I bought a SECOND one, to keep on the shelf, against the day my original unit suffers an unrepairable meltdown...or someone, somewhere in the world, produces a unit I'd rather have.
If you check the tact switch with DMM when closed they should read a short or very close to zero ohms. If anything higher than 10 ohms, expect them to be intermittent and just replace them.

rwilliam. did you successfully repair your gnx4?
I'm curious because I have the same problem for years now...
Thanks!
I actually took the tactile switch apart (not for the timid) and cleaned the contacts and lenticular copper contact that floats on top and super glued
the cover back on using a fine needle so no glue got inside. Works great and the switches came in the mail 3 days later. There are several tactile switch types in the GNX4 so if you have Electronic background like myself, no problem, if not dont chance it.

I know this post is a bit old but I have a GNX4 problem. I got the GNX4 off eBay and since I didn't read the fine prints carefully, stating that it is an untested unit, I'm stuck with it.
My GNX4 has power and works, it's just that some of the footswitches and buttons are responding. Three of the footswitches aren't working, and two buttons on top and three in the recorder aren't responding. So my questions are this:
Is there any way I can test or know if it's just the buttons?
I know that the footswitches are common tact type switches as describe in this post, but what about the small buttons on top and in the recorder? Are they common switches too?
Reason is because if I know it's just the buttons, then I will mend it myself. But if it's the IC board/ circuit problem, then I will sell it on eBay as parts. I don't want to risk taking it apart and break it further.
Not very common to have that many switches bad at once.
The bottom footswitch are common 2 pin (through lead) tactile switches. The ones around the recorder are SMD style tact switches. These type solder directly to the top of the board.
You can check them with an ohm meter. They should read like a short circuit or close to zero ohms when the switch is pressed. Anything not less than 3-5 ohm is bad. If it reads high resistance, they are bad.
Another possibility especially for the footswitches are bad solder or fractured solder around the pin contact on the board.
The only other circumstance I can come up with to create as many problems was if the unit has liquid or moisture damage.
Did you buy the unit \"as is\" per the sellers description?
The power adapter is original, 9VAC 2.1A.
The eBay guy did say sold as is. I thought he meant the package is sold without USB cable, no manual, no CD, only power adapter, which it's true as stated. And also state in the bottom that it's untested. So I can't return it since it was my fault for being a dumbass.
I guess I will open it up since the only way to tell is with the ohm meter and testing each switch. My friend is good with soldering so I will ask him to help me with it.
If the unit had moisture and/or liquid in it, is this unit completed wasted and non-fixable? What are the symptoms other than switches not working? Is this still fixable?
You can clean liquid damage with 99% pure alcohol and a brush. Some use 2\" paint brushes and cut the bristles down to about 1/2\" or you can use a tooth brush etc. I use an ultrasonic cleaner in house for service, but the brushing can also do a good job.
It really depends on the extent of any damage. If areas have a greenish appearance where the contaminant was found, it means the contaminant has already started eating through the pc board. That is not good. Still, some units can be cleaned and restored if the circuits paths are intact.
AWESOME!!!!
I too opened her up and was horrified at how lost I got. I put it back together and just use Xedit to control it, but a gunslinger's gotta have the stomp switches working. guess I'll have to keep an eye out for a replacement unit or someone I can trust to repair it here in ELP TX.
thanks for the hope that it can be done!!
Reading about your foot switch problem I thought I share my experience. I am an daily user of the GNX4. I've had two footswitches replaced over the past two years. To fix the foot switch I purchased 25 switches from Digitech ($5.00 two years ago) and gave my tech half of them and kept the rest. The GNX4 is built to repair. That foot switch board is one of the easiest boards to repair. Since my green board soldering skills are limited I pay $35 for my tech at the local music shop to install them. I've been very pleased.
The GNX4 is my only USB/midi recording interface and I enjoy working with it. I run Cakewalk Sonar X1 and X2 and Reaper as my DAW on a Windows 7 ultimate operating system. To make it all work I upgraded my Firmware to version A1.41 which is a beta version available on the web.
I hope this helps
