RP1000 ???

I have a GNX3 and I was looking for a possible alternative to upgrade to (if the new unit is better).

I went to a Guitar Center and there it was, the RP1000, in all its glory. I jumped on one of the stools, and had a go. I absolutely LOVE the construction. This thing was a tank. But I soon found myself stumbling around with the patches, etc. I simply couldn't find sounds that made me go \"wow\" and purchase it on the spot. The construction alone almost had me, but the sounds simply weren't there.

I completely blame myself for this shortfall, since I don't know how to work the unit. It works differently from the GNX. So, I had on of the salesmen stop by to tell me that he has the RP500 and loves it. I asked him to show me around the controls and lets see what this thing can do. He knew what he was doing, but he was getting the same non-stunning sounds I was. It might be the fact that the factory patches sucked as they did on the GNX3. It took me a while to create a patch that I was satisfied with on that unit also.

I hooked up the output to several different cabs, but each one sounded basically the same. I wasn't looking for a completely distorted sound, like death metal (found that patch), I was looking for something more along the lines of a nice Blackmore, Trower, or even a Lynch tone. I couldn't find it, and neither could the salesman. The guy was great, but after 45 minutes of trying, I bailed.

I am sure this thing can do much more than I witnessed. Has anyone else checked out the RP1000???? IF so, what were your findings?

  • I haven't gone and test-drove the '1000 yet, although I jones for a 500 or a 1000. But - I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar that the factory presets loaded onto a new unit suck just as bad, or worse, than the ones on a GNX. So take them with a grain of salt. If you really wanna test drive the thing, find a place who has someone working there who really knows their way around the unit and get THEM to show you around it and see if you can get some great sounds out of it...
  • I looked at the RP500 hard to go in front of my Mesa 5:50 you know pure stompbox mode amp/cab stuff off just truly an all in one stompbox thing to cover the few things effects in between overdrive sound I need that I can't ready get footswitchable from the Amp. I opted to just get standalone stomps to cover my live needs. I still think that the RP500 or 1000 would be superior to the GNX4 FOR LIVE USE WITH AMP. Everything else the GNX4 hands down 8) Still love my GNX4 Ed!! So how have you been bro? Hope all is well with you man. :D
  • The lead player in my sixties group got the RP1000 a few weeks ago and I must say it is a very impressive unit. It does work very well into the front end of the Sunn head in pure stomp mode, sound much better than MY GNX4 through the same amp. But that of course was what it was primarily designed to do where the GNX is more of a stand alone unit...I like Jim's 1000 so much I am considering the 500 for myself....
