Amplitube advantages - stomp box models that can be moved between various amps.
Amplitube disadvantages - you are tethered to the computer via a required hardware device - can't operate without the computer. EXTREMELY burdensome on the processor at least on PC. Probably would be fine with a quad core and 4+GB of ram. Hates my laptop PC. Work fine on my Core2 Mac. Very high cost.
Supermodels advantages - lots of amp and artists models, manu more brands of amps than other systems. Work with GNX4 away from PC
Supermodels disadvantages - Xedit seems to get quirkier with each OS update, and you need it to load patches.
Sound wise, in recordings, both are very good. If I could only keep one, I'd opt for the GNX4 and Supermodels.
Amplitube uses your resources (laptop or PC) to actually work on the guitar signal, might be more flexible in terms of effects chaining and amp combinations, BUT depends on you computer. To me is a serious limitation, as your PC or Laptop might be going to a club , bar or any stage, chances are to get more risky events on your machine, that might be valued much more than the amplitube software.... and unless you have a computer for the sole use of amplitube, you are risking your personal files if something happen to it during your performance. A friend of mine regrets so much the loss of his laptop when it felt down by accident during a jamming, the screen was gone and got some broken keypad. The pedalboard that he bought with it, are just a bunch of switches, nothing more... and that is a bit of a tricky thing if you consider the price of the software + the pedalboard.
but anyway in my opinion, unless you are going to play in your room only, the gnx4 is a standalone unit that works in any scenario, you can take it to a club, might connect it to a pc, to a mixer, to any PA etc, and you are actually using its own harware and software processor..... that counts...
