Lookin' to get into jazz/fusion

Hey out there.
How's it goin'? 8)

So I'm lookin to get into jazz/ jazz fusion for quite a while now but just 1. never had the time and 2. didn't know where to start. So now I ask the all knowing forum where do I start?

The closest thing I like to jazz right know is a band called Ohm. My taste in music tends to lean towards the heavier and louder side of things but im tryin to find something new to listen to something a little more quite. ut hopefully not boring. So any help you guys can give me would be great.

Thanks

  • There's alot out there. I might be dating myself.. But... fusion start with the lp that started it.. Billy Cobhams, Spectrum lp featuring Tommy Bolin. Then give Return To Forever a listen an each members solo stuff.. ie .. Stanley Clark, Chick Corea, Al Dimeolo an Lenny White.. Some of my favs..

Stop here to let others chime in.. Sure you want to go down that road? It's like getting into alternate tunings.. Once you go down the rabbit hole, it's hard to come back! :P

  • I've been playing a while. If you want to learn jazz, and some pretty incredible guitar technique, and you've got $20.00 a month to spare....

Sign up for lessons at the Jimmy Bruno Guitar institute. I've been there about 2 and 1/2 years, and my playing has grown in leaps and bounds.

Here's a Youtube vid of Jimmy.

Here's the link to his on-line guitar institute.

Jimmy has at the present 4 levels of lessons, about 200 in total. You take the lessons at your own pace. When feeling good about the lesson, you send in a video to Jimmy, and Jimmy responds back with a video, with a critique, and what you should be doing next.

I've been playing close to 40 years, and I've learned more from Jimmy in the last 2 and 1/2 years than anything. World class guitarist, and world class teacher.

Thanks for the advice Tal but im lookin into listening to jazz and fusion than playing it right now but that guy looks like an amazing player and I might look into his lessons.

  • Fusion record recommendations - Mahvishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire,

    Al Di Meola - anything
  • Billy Cobham
    Chick Corea
    Stanley Clark
    Al Dimeola
    Mcglaughlin
    Airto,
    Pat metheney
    Flora Purim
    Zappa
    Weather Report

There's a bunch more. but that should get you started, as far as listening. I'm more of a Be-Bop, and swing kind of guy. But Jimmy's method is for ANY kind of music. His goal is to make you a better guitarist, then you can take it from there, wherever you want to go..

    Good luck with it CFS..
  • Tom Scott and the L.A. Express - Tom Cat
    Ronnie Laws - Pressure Sensitive

two fusion albums I started listening to when they came out, and am still listening to.

  • Jeff Beck! .. H3ll it was Cobhams Spectrum lp that sent him in the direction he went in the 70's till now!

    RTF.. Romantic Warrior, Lp
Al Demeola.. Elegant Gypsies,Lp.. Robs choice track .. Race with Devil on Spanish Highway! 8)
Stanely Clark... School Days, Lp... School Days! 8)
Lenny White... Dang can't remember the Lp .. but he had a song called Stewed Cabbage and Galactic Beans <--- Killer riff .. I still play it to warm up!

Jean Luc Ponty .. Killer fusion.. on Violin no less! Al Demelo worked on an Lp or 2 with him!

Man if this and others suggestions don't grab ya by the short hairs and make you go YEEeee! Then maybe you should check out some Zydeco... :P

    Happy listening mate!
  • Greg Howe!!!

He's actually only somewhat jazz/fusion, with lots of funk/rock thrown on top. But it's good stuff.

Hyperacuity and Extraction are recent ones that fall within the jazz/fusion boundaries. I haven't heard the latest ones.
