Replacement for the GNX4?

I've been doing research and looking around for a robust workstation. I like the recording, looping, drum track, play along features that I've read about on the GNX4. I know these things are chock full of sounds and modeling, so at this point, I don't want to muddy my questions with what units have more sounds. I don't use them all but I am aware they are there and I like to play, but I have effects pedals and modelers already, and I am really looking for a higher end recording type of unit.

My question - after all this research I now see the GNX4 is discontinued. Can anyone recommend something in this class of unit?

  • If you just need a good recording platform, check out the new Zoom R16 multi-track recorder http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=2009. For about $399, you get alot of recorder. I personally have the Zoom HD16CD http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1919&brandID=4 and love it, but that unit is at the end of it's product life cycle. You can still get them for about $599, if interested.

I wish Digitech would have kept improving the workstation concept, but they decided not to continue the series. Too bad. I am still a big fan of the GNX4. But you can get great new products that individually have more features, like the Zoom R16 recorder, which specilizes in recording. The big draw for me with the GNX4 workstation was the all-in-one package with so many cutting edge features for its time. I think that the Zoom R16 has all the features that you mentioned. The R16 does not have a built in drum machine, but the HD16CD has both a drum and bass machine built into it. For play along, I just usually find some backing tracks and load them up in the recorder. So, in reality, I don't often use the built in drum and bass machine like I thought I would. I think both the R16 and HD16CD offer many insert effects for guitars and vocals. I usually run my bass track through the Ampeg SVT effect, which is what I like and cannot afford in real life.

Something to consider anyway. Give them a look over and see what you think. Maybe we can come up with other ideas if you have more needs. Best wishes.
  • Tragically, as 'taus sez, the GNX4 is an older design that's at, or near, the end of it's life cycle. Shameful, 'cuz there's nothing else like it, and it seems the concept has lost favor. I personally don't think anything has come along yet that can actually replace it, tho surely there's other products better suited for certain situations. But I'd give up my next date with Shania for a modern/updated v of the '4....
  • Thanks for the insightful post. I did go and look at that Zoom unit. I am looking for a floor/foot controlled type of unit. Reason being is that right now, I record everything into my PC and it works fine. I use Mixcraft, Cakewalk, and Audacity primarily depending on what I am try to accomplish.

I have a CryBaby Wah pedal and a Digitech RP100 that I connect into my PC for recording purposes. It isn't a total pain, but I have to keep going back to the keyboard and disrupting my playing to start/stop recording, then creating loops out of my rhythm tracks, playback, etc.

I'm trying to get more control out of my feet so I don't have to stop playing or put the guitar down in between jams. The GNX4 looks like exactly what I am looking for. Sounds like I may have to find a used one if I want that kind of workstation.
  • There isn't anything marketed with the GNX4 options.

Some stores are still selling them. One guy at another forum bought one new at Samash store for $200, even though they still run close to $400 new.

Yes, the GNX4 along with PTP on the computer allowed you to do that. The optional foot controller for the GNX4 made it even more flexible. I don't know of anything else that does the same thing.

I hear of guys getting great deals on used GNX4 units. And you still might be able to find one new at a reduced clearance price somewhere. Every once in a while someone will post a GNX4 for sale on this forum. Maybe you could post a \"Wanted\" thread on the forum for a used GNX4 and hook up with a seller.

I'd sell my GNX4 if something better, for me, came along (like a GNX5). But that dream died long ago. So, I'm holding on to my GNX4 until it dies. Best wishes.
  • GNX4 (and the GNX3 thats what I have) are in a class all there own for what they do. I love mine and use it all the time..but answering your question about other rigs that do higher end recording plus live stuff I have a \"Eleven Rack \" It gets both those jobs done pretty well for me. However its not a all in one floor unit like the GNX series and not nearly as affordable.
  • I appreciate all of the feedback. After a false start on a \"new\" unit that isn't coming, I found one and bought. It is actually on its way as we speak. I'm very excited to get up and running and dive into the GNX4.

Look forward to talking with yous about features and functionality rather than what to get!
  • Congrats. The '4 is a killer unit; one of those units that never limits you. It'll do almost anything you ask it to, and more.
Just bear in mind there's a mega learning curve. Keep your manual handy to refer to; experiment - a LOT; search the forum - most of the issues you'll run into have already been experienced by someone.
There's a few really tech-savvy guys here, and some really experienced musicians too. So we'll all do what we can. Myself, I just rah-rah...I'm just here to meet chix and try to get these hosers to fix me up with Shania. Or at least Megan Fox. 8)
