Made my Singing Debut

Not that anyone cares, but I made my singing debut this past evening with the band. I sang ZZ Top's \"Gimme All Your Lovin'.\" I was on the list for the first set, where we normally put our new material for the first night out, but I got switched to the third set (our power set) before we started the gig. Although I was nervous, the guys really showed their confidence in me putting my song in the third set.

Anyway, no squeaks, no fainting, no blackouts. Confident enough to say that it didn't suck. My mother said it sounded good (totally unbiased opinion!). Actually, we had a singer from another band in the audience and he told me on break that it came off good and he encouraged me to sing more lead vocals. At this point, I'm happy just to have one song. I'd like to eventually add a couple more and my ultimate goal would be to sing one song per set. Our lead vocalist is really encouraging me to sing more. Our new lead guitarist is a solo vocalist in his own right, and he sings about 4 songs for us. So the lead guitarist and myself hope to each have one song per set to take the vocal burden off our lead singer. I just need to find some more songs that I can play bass and sing at the same time.

The long and short of it all, I had fun and got a few compiments. What more could a person ask for? Best wishes.

  • Cool!

That song usually works better than Sharp Dressed Man for covers around here. I guess you'll be singing more often now!
  • The song is getting good feedback from the crowd, so the guys decided to keep it in the third set for the Saturday night gig again. My biggest critic, my wife, was at our show on Saturday night and got to hear me sing for the first time (the second night for me). Even she liked it, and that is a high bar to jump over.

Even better, the guys in the band now want me to sing more songs as lead vocal. That gives me a boost of confidence because in the past we had a lead guitarist who refused to let me sing anything. But that was probably because he could not sing at all and in fact, our lead singer eventually got to the point where he told him to not even sing backup. That was a blow to his ego, and I know that probably had a lot to do with him not wanting me to sing any lead vocals. But we have a new lead guitarist now who also is a solo artist and he is really encouraging me to sing more and is very supportive.

You know, it's really a team effort and what makes the song is that the guys play their parts well and eveyone sings backup on the chorus of the song. So it came off well both nights. I know lots of people may be thinking who cares, but I was just excited that I finally tried to sing lead vocals on a song and it didn't suck. I'm still at many points in my music where the little things still mean a lot to me and I can still get excited about a good performance from the band. Take care.

That's great taus! I envy anyone who can sing...Let alone sing and play at the same time..

Several bt's without vox.. I try it.. Though I may be able to getaway with it on a few certain tunes, in an emergency.. I truely have no business singing :( Actually if I sound like anyone, closest would be Danny Joe Brown.. ie Molly Hatchet.

Personal pride an being all you can be.. that's what it is about.. whether expanding into vox or other instruments. WTG taus .. Keep growing mate!
  • Thanks for the kind words, Rawb. It's all about baby steps. At least for me, anyway.
