Luthier help?
Ok so some might remember I got this old academy ovation..
Any thoughts on how to get the aluminum fret board seperated from the neck? Without damaging the dense composite foam crap the neck is made of? Better yet anyone have an old wood neck that needs a home on an ovation bowl?
I ain't much on autobody... but a heat gun just don't make it on that fiberglass top on it.... Best way to remove it from the bowl?
Suggestions? Uh.. feasable suggestion!

Steinberger comes to mind, but I've seen all kinds of ideas out there, using combination's of wood, metals, and carbon fiber.
I think most still use rosewood fretboards, for the simple reason of refretting.
This Academy of yours was made to be a throw away I think from the inception. After a couple fret dressings, you're done. Most people don't play a guitar that hard to consider reworking. The neck job or neck replacement exceeds the value of the guitar.
If you want to at least try reworking this guitar to a rosewood fretboard, before maybe replacing the neck completely. [map the neck fret positions for the new fretboard so you don't have to recalculate] I guess I would first try taking an ordinary household iron, and see if I could heat the aluminum well enough to separate it from the neck. Aluminum transfers heat really well. You might even have to file the frets down to get better heat transfer, but I'd try it first and see what happens.
Only other thing I can imagine one could do is grind it off. Wear a mask, and keep in mind aluminum dust is quite explosive, so do it in open air, maybe even with a fan.
And do what with it? Put it in storage?
Ya it isn't a graphite comp. Forget what they call it ( don't feel like looking it up) More like a real hard dense foam stuff.. Still kinda worried about melting or burning it...
That was my plan.. rather than put that aluminum back on.. Instead of looking for or making a new neck. ..
This is just a lil side project (ya know.. No rush) just to see if I can get something somewhat decent to take camping or out on the boat with..
So if something happened to it .. no biggie
Are the frets worn too low?
Actually they look like they have never been filed or used much, They still have crisp 90 degree edges on them. Did and still am thinking about cleaning them up a bit.. And will if I still use this neck as is... I was just thinking if I am going to go through the trouble of making a new wood top ( still in the air on what type) why not just see about putting a rose wood fret board on .. Basically thinking of tone... But it does seem to be looking like it maybe more trouble than it's worth..
you know my usual fee is very reasonable.
