¡ It's Official GNX4 Discontinued !

Comments

  • Nooooooooooo :(

C'mon DT! Wheres a replacement with similar flexability/features??

I hope that all of the feedback and suggestions from this forum won't go ignored!

    Peace,

    Dobb.
  • Can't say we didn't expect this. It becomes unprofitable to keep compatibility with new OS, driver and DAW support. Technology advances so quickly in the market, and keeping old technology updated to operate with new technology has it's limits, and must be dropped sooner or later. So why not a GNX5 with many of the same features of the old GNX4? I think the economic environment also has a great effect and it's all about the competition and demand.

I'm old school and still believe in products that stand on their own merits, no matter how the world changes around it. It does get expensive to keep up with the ever evolving market, and I guess you have to accept it comes and goes quickly.
  • BROOtal. This is like discontinuing the ball point pen or something. The '4 is a timeless unit that still hasn't been surpassed in function.
  • I would not feel so bad that the GNX4 is being discontinued if Digitech had a GNX5 to replace it. IMHO, the GNX4 still is the best unit available for those of us that wanted the everything in one box concept.

I have got my money's worth out of GNX4 many times over. After years of not really playing guitar, I bought a GNX4 and it reinspired me to start playing again. I bought it so I had some way to play along with backing tracks and maybe record some tracks for myself. That lead me to seeking out and playing with other musicians. Before long, I found myself in a couple of bands and have been playing \"professionally\" now for over 2 years. Was it all the GNX4? Probably not, but I can tell you that it was the GNX4 that got me interested in music again and without that inspiration, I would still be sitting at home watching TV on the weekends.
  • Great piece of gear, and the ONLY piece of gear I own..

    Ditto. ExACTly. :?
  • I use mine every week for practice. It also gives me the ability/Interface to record into Sonar. I just have a stock soundcard. If this thing quite I would find another! Can't do without the 4 my friends! 8) :D
  • This is why we need a 'hacked' version of firmware for the GNX4 - that way the community can update/add features and bug fix.
  • Not new business strategy from Digitech, they did it with my RP10 then RP20 then the GNX series. They all had very short life spans.

Actually the GNX4 had a long life span compared to the others. Unfortunately, they had stiff competition from Line 6 (although, for me at least, they are different and don’t have the same application).

I would have guessed there was room to advance the GNX4 with software updates, new features or effects or anything!!
But I suppose Digitech are using hardware effect voicing and is not that much upgradable through software,,, who knows, I’m just guessing in surprise or denial.

Not even a version 2 of a firmware out and its discontinued.

Exactly. I think about the amount of gear I've bought and sold over the years and I scratch my head why I kept changing things. There are certain bits of gear I kick myself for getting rid of because a newer, shinier gadget came along and I thought I wanted it. For example, years ago I had an old Ibanez multi-fx unit (PT3?) that I swear had the best sounding compressor ever and was superb with my teles. I was able to get that Brent Mason tone exactly and I loved it! But.... something else came along with other good features which I thought at the time I needed. To this day however I've never really been as happy with other compressors, DT included, but I'm living with it.

So yeah, if you have a product you like using and love the sound of - why get rid of it?? I'm totally over spending hard earned cash on electrical gizmos that go out of date in 2 years. I'm also sick and tired of the troubleshooting problems that go with them also. For example, I first got into the GNXs for the flexibility of modelling and the recording options but the constant problems I had recording drove me nuts. Every time I tried to record there would be a problem with the software/computer, even when something did work it wouldn't work the next time. I still haven't got it sorted after 2 years so its got me flocked! Even though I love my GNX and enjoy the amp models to practice with, using it drove me back to valve amps and the simpler life of a nice valve tone, a nice axe.....and a big smile on my face!

I haven't saved any money I guess, because the cost of the valve heads I own (Rivera KR7, Mesa and JSX) has cost me a packet anyhow. But I'll have these amps forever (esp the Rivera) and I'll still be smilin in 20 years. Admittedly I have bought the RP500 which I run with the KR7 and I'm really happy with it - in fact I haven't been this happy with my rig ever! :D But the RP is simple to use, sounds pretty good and I can practice to backing tracks with it - works for me because its practical, not a technical freakin headache. So I actually bought this unit for the fx more so than the modelling which is what will make me keep it for a long time hopefully. To be honest though, I really should be offloading the JSX and Mesa because I've hardly turned them on since buying the Rivera   I say that in all modesty too so please don't amp envy - I would gladly give away that bloody Mesa :x it breaks down more than my old lawn mower! I would probably throw in that PRS Custom 22 of mine too because its equally as big a dog as the Mesa!!....musical garbage!

So yes its sad the GNX4 is going offline and its definitely worthwhile hanging on to it if you really enjoy using it - its all about the smile factor!
  • All the GNXs have been discontinued. This was pretty much known by the marketing people since the RPs and GSP1101 first came out.

Amen. I'll keep my GNX4 until it dies, but then I'll move on. I have no reason to get anything else at this point because, quite honestly, there is still a lot left on the GNX4 that I have not used or experimented with. Also, like you, I find that I just don't have the time to continually learn new products. I recently bought a Zoom HD16CD multi-track recorder, which I love, but there is almost as many features on that as the GNX4. I have only been able to scratch the surface on the list of features it offers, and, already, that model is being discontinued in favor of a flash card based recording solution (but the new units have less features). Fortunately, that Zoom is also a great stand alone unit, like the GNX4, so it will still work 10 years from now (unless the unit breaks) even if Microsoft has a newer OS that will not work with my current software packages.

Maybe I'm just getting too old. But buying new toys that go out of style or production in a few years no longer has the same appeal to me. And it's not just the money, like you said, I don't have the time to troubleshoot and learn new equipment over and over again.

I just hope that by the time my GNX4 really bites the dust, that Digitech, or someone else, revives the all in one box concept and I'll buy the new 'GNX5'. Good ideas usually come around again sooner or later. I think the GNX concept will eventually make a comeback, at least, I hope it will.
  • I've spent years collecting patches. That what kills me-I will eventually lose them unless dt make a unit that is compatible. If they did it would ensure my next unit would be a dt. Seems like a no brainer to me?
  • Alrighty then, I would like to formally request the API for the unit so I can write my own .Net utilities for it.

    Thanks.
  • Hey Folks! I'm kinda new around here. I recently bought an RP1000 and my Son has a GNX3000. I've been A/B-ing the two and then came here and found this thread. I use the RP into a couple of tube amps w/o cab sims and really love this unit. When using it this way the amp models in the RP sound considerably more realistic than the GNX3000's amp models. The stompbox ODs and distortions sound pretty much the same. In fact I think the Rat sounds better in the GNX3000. While I love the tone and organic nature of the RP's amp models I miss some of the features of the GNX units like the data wheel and the ability to run two amp models at the same time. If Digitech came out with a new work station with the Audio DNA2 processor and the features of the GNX4 I'd be all over that. Is there any rumors of a new work station in the near future?

Yup. Any day now. I hear it's fully through development; they're just waiting for Shania to ask me out (translation: \"for he|| to freeze over\").

Sorry for the jab. But welcome to the show - we have lovely gifts for you backstage. Cruise the forum, there's lots of terrific threads, some fun, some informative, some surreal (thanks, 'tou!!!)

Shania called me the other day and was trying to get me to tell you she has a crush on you. I told her I don't play cupid. Seriously though I was looking under multi-effects on their website and the options are getting slim. Just the RP series and The GSP1101. Anyway I'm content with the RP1000 for now.
  • After going to the last 6 NAMM conventions and asking alot of questions.....the music industry as a whole looks bleak :( It takes a lot less R&D to put out a simple product with a quicker return of invested time.

IE:BOSS put out the GT-10 and it has more bells and whistles but tone wise falls short compared to the GT-8 and that hurt sales once word got out and all of that research hasn't even made them break even yet......kind of like pouring water out of a sinking ship,it might eventually get profitable, but not today.

Right now you can buy used GNX4's for $200 almost every week so unless the new model really blows the GNX4 out of the water, they would have to compete with the used markets money flow.In other words, why would someone spend $500 on something that only has a few more options in a market thats tanking........so a LOT of products are put to bed or the back burner right now while the economy swings back.

So lets keep letting them know that we want something new and are willing to pay for it and hopefully they will eventually respond with a kick-a$$ product for us to go berzerk over :D:D

until that day..........I bought a spare GNX4 for $150 off craigslist just as a back up
  • They just moved away from the On Board Recording features and went to more of a M9/ M13 type pedal configuration with amp modeling.

What's funny is to think users have no need for 8 track OBR's etc when so many stand alone 8 trk multitrack recorders are still being produced and sold like hot cakes. Tascam Boss and Fostex are still selling those units for about 300 bucks. They use flash cards but they also have FF/REW buttons on the transport and auto punch features which would not be too much of a problem to add on a next gen workstation.

Actually, I'm shocked to not see Digitech come out with something effects specific like the Boss ME's or the M9/ M13 to compete there.
