  • \"Barracks humor\", I s'pose. A feeble layman such as myself jes' dun git it.

But nonetheless...those who have - or do - serve as soldiers are due their props, and anyone who faces live combat deserves everyone's gratitude. It coulda been YOU.
  • Guess we know who the real deviant is.

  • Did any of the Vets take on Applebees special for Vets?

Happy Vet day (belated btw).. sorry I was out of town
  • That was nice to see, and they are Patriots for doing that! 8)
I'm on real harsh meds right now, and usually eat less than 2 cups
of food in a day, if I'm having a good day.
I think today is a good day though. :)
  • Yes, my daughter and I went to Applebee's with my Air Force veteran Mom. The place was all decorated up with red, white and blue balloons and crowded with veterans and/or their friends and families - a really nice, warm and friendly atmosphere. We had a wonderful time - we ran into friends of my Mom who invited us to join them, one of whom was also a veteran. The manager went around to each table and had a short chat. It was a nice thing Applebee's did and not bad for businees either I'd assume as each veteran was in a party of an average of three to five others, I would guess.

with sincere and deep gratitude to the verterans among us, and especially of course, those who gave their lives,

  • Thanks for the thought, Shredd. As a vet, I'll take the compliments and appreciation.

Also, being a member of the health care system, I just wanted to say that I hope America does not forget about all the continuing and lifelong medical needs of our service members. Unlike previous wars, this all volunteer military sees our service members being sent back to war in Iraq or Afghanistan for multiple tours. I met a guy last year who had 5 tours in Iraq, and he was suffering badly from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and he was being sent back there for yet another tour. IMHO, we are abusing the volunteer military. Repeat tours in a war zone has been linked to the highest levels of PTSD our military has ever seen. I have read articles that estimate 1 out of 3 combat veterans will suffer lifelong from PTSD due to these repeat tours.

Wheter or not you support the ongoing wars, I hope we will support our vets with the tax dollars required to provide the lifelong health care for the physical and mental wounds they received in the line of duty for our country. It won't be cheap, but many of our service members have paid the price in lost limbs, mental health problems, broken families, or the ultimate - loss of life.
  • I can't agree w/'taus more. Even as a nurse and vet, he makes a really relevant point - the USA is wringing the snot out of their soldiers. Never mind the poor SOB's who lose limbs, or worse...but the psychological stress of going into combat over and over has got to be just devastating. Especially when it's a pointless and unwinnable conflict like this, where any sane soldier has got to be thinking \"what the hail am I DOING here?!?\". I wish that, when I was a scrawny kid getting my butt beaten, some big bad dude was following me around beating people up for me. And not even taking my lunch money.
