FINALLY!!!

I finished my project. :D

to start, here's what I started with.

I cut the amp in half......

Then I started to make the new speaker cab.....

Notice the rubber feet on the side so I can have it upright as well.

The cab itself costed me....

15.00 - 3/4\" 2'x4' birch ply
10.00 - grill
4.00 - plywood saw blade
6.00 - spray paint
2.00 - paint can trigger
2.00 - T-Bolts for the speakers
6.00 - sand paper

for a total of $44.00, give or take a few.

It would have costed me more, but I already had a little bit of salvaged birch, corners, a handle, casters, screws.......ect.....

But for now I'm only running one of the speakers until I get 2 speakers that are 16ohms (the ones I have are 8, and my amp is rated at 8ohms)

  • Nice project. Instead of getting 16 ohm speakers and wiring them in parallel, you could get 4 ohm speakers and wire them in series. http://www.termpro.com/articles/spkrz.html. I was trying to think of a way to get your two 8 ohm speakers wired so that they went back to 8 ohms, but I'm not that smart. Best I could come up with was a crossover that would split the freqs between the two speakers so each speaker is still only getting 8 ohms. Another thought was to install an A/B switch so if you blew out a speaker to the Rock N' Roll gods, you could just switch over to the other speaker. Best wishes.
  • Nice job man! Kudos looks great to me! 8) :D
  • Wow ... don't like the sound of it? it's just that I noticed you didn't comment on how great it sounds! So one speaker sucks .. eh? :P

    But it does look good!

IC U still got that supersize capo on that guitar! :P  8)
  • honestly, I was surprised at how loud one speaker could be in a 2-speaker box. I think the other speaker does a little sympathetic resonation. Really, all I can say is it sounds huge!!! The closed back definitely gives it a good \"metal\" tone - especially when it's loud. All in all - it's as good sounding as it is looking

I did think about getting two 4ohm speakers and wire them in series, but the 16ohm ones seem a little easier to come by. I think it has to do with the fact that most guitar amps only go as low as 8ohms. I also thought maybe I could get them to stay at 8ohms if I wire them series/parallel. But that only works with 4 speakers. It sounds so good now though I'm afraid of getting new speakers and not having it sound as good. The Randall Jaguar I'm running right now was originally made for Randall by Celestion (based on the G12) and it sounds AWESOME!!! I wish I could just get a couple of those, but they don't make them anymore.
  • hey try running those in series and see how you like it. it would be 16 ohms but I have noticed on some stuff I did I had to go that way and they actually sounded really good like that. and you wont ever have to worry about overloading the amp. just a thought before you spend the cash on 2 new speakers.

That would be interesting. Would two speakers at 16 ohms sound as loud as one speaker at 8 ohms? I wonder if he would lose a lot of power output going into 16 ohms versus 8 ohms. My concern was that a 25 watt amp might be pushed down to a 12.5 watt amp and not put out much volume at all. I really don't know. So it would be a good experiment.
  • How badly does it hum now that you've made it a head? I notice the reverb pan is real close to the output transformer. This is why most valve heads don't have reverb.

Haven't noticed any difference. I'll keep that in mind next time I use it. I mainly use the \"power amp in\" jack with my GNX3K, so any hum in that part is canceled.
