Epiphone Black Beauty Les Paul or Fender Deluxe Player Strat

Alright, both of these guitars have great quailities, and I've been torn between the two. They're both awesome in their own ways, so I thought I'd go to a guitar community and ask.

I play virtually ALL rock (that includes metal, punk, and so on), I play a LOT of blues, some jazz-rock fusion, trippy psychedelic stuff, experimental stuff, folk, grunge, a trickle of funkish rock, reggae, and a lot of variations of all that.

Then, a lot of my favorite artists played these, too.

Jimmy Page, Jerry Cantrell, Mike McCready, Bob Marley, Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia, George Harrison, and more play/played Les Pauls.

Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stone Gossard, Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, John Frusciante, David Gilmour, John Lennon, Pete Townshend and more all play/played Strats.

And the price for both are about the same, although I did find a place or a few where I can get the Strat cheaper, but that's not really high on the concern list.

Thanks to any who help in advance.

(P.S. First post/thread for me.)

  • If I were me: I'd get the BBeauty, for simple reason of versatility and suitability to your interests.
That said, the strat sounds tasty too. Better get both. 8)

XD I like your thinking, but I don't have that much money.
  • I voted for the fender. Although I see the one you have chosen is all single coils. Still should be versatile enough? You could always do a little upgrades & possibly put a Hot Rail or something in the Bridge. I just back over the summer got an FMT American Deluxe Strat & I could not be more pleased!! It truly seams to be the kind of guitar that 20 years down the road you still love Probably more than you do now when it's all new. Anyhow I know there kind of different animals comparing the Deluxe to the players Strat BUT I doubt you would be disapointed with that Strat either? Keep us posted & happy New guitrar year man! 8)
  • Strat. Swap out the SC pickups with some hotrails and a splitter, and you can't get much more versatile.
  • LP !! If you don't mind the weight
  • two entirely differant ends of the spectrum

I'd go strat first because of the comfortability issues..then when you get the LP and get sick of the weight or it falling off your leg(when you sit down and play) you can grab the strat and keep playing

I've had several of each and now I'm making \"hybrids\" to satisfy both hungers :D

actually you can............ get the lp and put in 2 coil taps and 2 phase switches  I have yet to hear a hot rails \"nail\" the warmth of a full size humbucker....BUT,if you coil tap the full size humbucker and reverse phase the coil then you can \"quack\" with the best of them even with 500k quarter sized pots 8)

one thing i will say is that gibson offer really great stock pick-ups but stock fender pups fall short and i have ALWAYS had to go FCS

Thank you, and I am more used to a Strat, being as my current guitar is a Fullerton (never heard of 'em? Me either...) red Strat with single coils and no tremolo bar.

    And I will!

    Sounds kewl, thanks for answering.

I'll think about it, but so far it's not looking good for Pauley. I myself am also leanin' towards the Strat a little.

    Haha, yeah.

Yeah, the weight I can imagine would be a bit of a problem, 'specially since I play bot standing and sitting.

I'd love to make a hybrid!!! But I'm not THAT experienced yet.
  • The Epi LPs are lighter than the Gibson LPs. I have both, and I posted several messages regarding the differences between the 2.
  • Although my current electric guitar is a dual humbucker semi-hollow body, I would go with DPS. Once they are set up it's hard to beat a strat-o-caster for versatility.

But either guitar would look nice in my collection.

    the break down......

    1. Secondary booster on/off switch.

    2. Master volume.

    3. Pickup selector switch.

    4. CAP MOD in/out switch. DOWN is the normal FAT booster sound and UP is less volume and more bite.

    5. Primary booster on/off switch.

    6. Phase switch. Only works when both picups are on. Creates a thin funky sound.

    7. Neck pickup series/parallel switch. Sounds like a coil tap but has less hum.

    8. Bridge pickup series/parallel switch. Sounds like a coil tap but has less hum.

    9. Neck pickup volume.

    10. Master tone.

    11. Primary booster volume.

    12. Secondary booster volume.

    13. 6 position Varitone.

    14. Varitone in/out switch.

This electronics circuit comes standard on all Moser 10/6 Model Guitars.

    *beaten* :P
  • I own a BB and its the best guitar I ever bought.
I have a couple of Ibanez that cost more and a custom frankenstrat, but the Les Paul gets more play than all put together.

They need a service regularly, but they sound like absolute gold.

If you're are thinking of choosing a guitar based on weight over its tone then you need to go to the Samick section....lol
  • I have an Epi LP Custom which I really like. It's more playable than my Fender (Squire) Strat. But your Strat is way above what I have, and my Epi LP Custom is way above my Squire Strat. Anyway, I've always been a fan of the LP style and sound. Heavier, yes. But I like the sound, and feel, of the guitar. Currently I'm playing bass so my LP Custom feels like a feather in comparison anyway. I'd love to have the Black Beauty on my rack. But I really have nothing against the Strats either. Wish I could afford a better Strat myself.

Buy both and send me the one you don't like.
  • Personally, I would go Fender. I have played both brands, and just prefer the feel of a Fender. Both sound great, both can get a wide range oftones, for me it would all come down to feel.
  • I have an Epi BB which is sweet. Also, it is heavy. I also have an Epi strat which is also (strangely) heavy. Have a Schecter C-1 classic which is sweet as well and the best looking of them all. But my favorite is my Parker P-42. It is plays so sweet and easy. It has two HB's with coil tapping so it can sound \"stratified\". I only added these extra comments because they are all in the same price range. Actually the Parker is a little less $. To answer your question though......LP > strat. Parker beats all.
  • To me its personal preferance. But, since you asked, I voted for black beauty.

In the 70's, 2 of my favorite guitar players were Peter Frampton and Ace Frehley. Both played black Les Paul cutoms with 3 pick ups. Ever since then I was in love with those guitars. Never could afford them. By the time I Epi came out with theirs I was married with a kid and still couldn't swing the price tag.

I think the les paul, compared to the strat you showed us, is going to be more versitle in what ever you play. The two strats that I had-I had DiMarzio double humbucker as back pick up. I played mostly metal ie Judas Priest, Kiss, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen. And sounded great on CCR as well.

    Hope this helps
