Thinking of pulling the trigger on a Gretsch G5120.

Been playing out alot latley and found myself doing alot of old numbers like \"thats allright mama, all shookup, fulsom prison blues, etc... and while I love my es 137 I have been checking out Gretsch guitars again. I would love to have a bigsby for rockabillyish stuff.
After Fender took over these Korean and Japanese Gretsches seem to play great. The Korean G5120 in orange is really starting to grow on me.

The bodies and fit and finish seem to be awsome. I played the Brian Setzer model (g6120) for 3000.00 then the g5120 side by side and while the G6120 is to die for the 600.00 dollar g5120 was better than anything I thought possible in that price range. The epi es or ibanez ART sereies didnt compaire at all in its class . It didnt feel like a fake Gretsch at all. I could not say that about the others. It ws actually really fun to play and after a while I relized I was making a spectical of myself in GC and put it down. Its been awhile a since a guitar has made me smile as much.
I would replace the tuners with locking ones and the clear pickgaurd has to go but other than that I actually liked the pups alot. inbetween gibson and a filtron IMHO.
anyway anybody got one around here I might just have to pull the trigger on this and a Hardewire DL-8 for christmas :!:

  • I've secretly wante one as well...
Not if, but WHEN you get it, don't forget to do a little posting bro...
Been awhile, since I've gotten to hear some cool 0DB tunes.. 8)
  • Hey ODB,

I almost bought a 5120 last year, my final two choices came down to the 5120 or the Washburn HB35, the only thing that stopped me from buying the 5120 was GC would not offer any kind of case, soft or hard, with the deal, even though I told them I was ready to buy the guitar and had the money ready. They did have a case available for an extra $80.00 It seems to me if I am going to pay out $600.00 (US) of my hard earned money there should be a case to protect the guitar. So I went with the Washburn HB35.

I thought then and still do now the guitar is very playable, and it fills a sound nich very well. I think for the rock-a-billy, early Elvis-Scottie Moore sound, you would be hard pressed to find anything that would sound better for the price.

  • Hey guys Just ordered the Gretsch and a new Digitech Hardwire DL-8. should be here around Christmas. Paid for with gig money so its even sweeeter! :P
I will definaltley record with the 2 and post. Sorry I havent posted lateley. Its not that I am doing less music its the opposite. The more I play out the less time I have for writing. On the opther hand it gives me some time to recharge the batteries for too. I have no gigs until after the holidays so I cant wait to try the new toys out.
  • ODB, Good for you :!: Enjoy the new guitar when you get it. Looking forward to hearing the music you will make the guitar.

    peace
  • I love Scotty I have a book on the \"Guitars of Elvis\" it is HARD!!! I need TIME to master the TRavis pick basics before taking it to some of his level. Absolute MASTER!!!
Would love to hear some of that stuff brother!

Mike B I checked out the washburn...man thats a great looking fiddle 8)
I can see why you had a hard time choosing. I figured without a case just meens they put more money into the guitar...wishful thinking I bet ...so many guitars...so little time

I've been listening to Hillbilly rock as I call it alot latley as its perfect for the jazz bar I play at. I am an old 80s 90's rock singer so this is challenging for me to play all the guiatrs in a duo.
I always did some basic rythm work in my old band and gave the bass player a break on a few tunes, but this all in one singer guitarist stuff is butt kickin hard for me to pull off as well as I would like.
You totally start respecting these players like Scotty , brian S., the Rev Horton, etc... on a whole new level for the huge big tones and full articulated rythms that sound so full and toney. The Claw stuff just drops my jaw... go to youtube and look for \"the Hellicasters\" ...gotta learn claw technique! That kinda stuff can take a lifetime to pull off for average guys like me :)
This project has opened up the guitar rut I was in and the chance of me being considered an actuall guitarist is a possibility... in 3-10 years  I think buying DVDs instead of a book for me to acttually learn the techniques correctly and the fact I actually am starting to enjoy woodshedding for a hour or 2 every night is starting to pay off.
I will post some tones over the new year break but wont promise ANY CLAW stuff ... :P 8) That level of playing is reserved for advanced players like... hey maybe TAL can show us how its done in a video
 you rewl Tal I know you got some chickin-pickin in ya somewhere dontcha
    peaceout D.
