I dunno... I hear the similarities, but iffy at best. Best of luck to him, either way.
EDIT: didn't notice the vocal melody at first. That does sound like that exact song. Still not necessarily a shoe-in case... the melody follows basic chord tones of the progression, and you can't copyright a progression. It would have to be pretty much identical to prove.
It's not in the same key. The comparison videos change the key.
By that logic, Iron Maiden should sue Papa Roach for Last Resort... cause it's the same riff as Gendis Khan.
I was waiting for that case to happen 1st time I heard \"last resort\"!
Most are not as particular when it comes to riffs as long as the flow and direction of the song is not identical. Not sure Satch has a case or not.
If he does, that can open a bigger can of worms for any 3 chord G-C-D songs in country!
I am a huge Satch fan, but how many times have you heard overlays of songs on a re-mix, or you hear a song start on the radio you like to find out its not what you thought.
I could see Satch having a case if it was a note for note or word for word(satch doesn't have words). Satch's song starts withe accoustic and coldplays song starts with keyboards. I'm not a coldplay fan, but I'd say coldplay don't have much to worry about. Click below to hear the simularities.
All so all we have to do is add change some words & move the Key of a tune and it's O.K. for songs to sound Identical & not be copying?? IMOP that is Spot on with Satch regardless of what Key They played it in! It's a shame peeps what to mimic someone else & not just be themselves. Even though comon Satch if there was anyone to get some AWSOME Melodies from  He is Awsome! 8)
Does he really use the surfer guitar?!? I agree, it's so easy these days to digitally sample and adjust a song to make a new beat. That youtube video is really convincing to me. And just because it's instrumental does not give them licesnce to steal a melody. Sure it's simple, but a melody is a melody, and that entire song \"Viva La Vida\" IS that melody.
does he REALLY use that guitar? :x

Your right you can't copyright chord progressions, so it has to be the melody of the chorus...
