Loud Static on Mono and Stereo USB Recording

I've been recording with Audacity and Reaper. On both programs, I get this obnoxiously loud static noise when I try to record a second track onto another one. I have tried audio output through my mono amp, stereo headphones, and laptop speakers. The headphones SEEM to work a little better (they are stereo obviously) but it still happens. I've tried splitting the tracks to left and right (stereo and mono) but that doesn't solve it either.

What I am doing now is not only splitting tracks to left and right (mono) on the input/recording, but I'm putting the output/audio through my headphones with each track panned to the opposite side. That SEEMS to help a little but not 100%.

My setup: I have a USB connecting my laptop to a Digitech RP150 with headphones running out of the Digitech RP150. When I try the amp I have the line going out of the left/mono output to the amp.

I've heard laptops cause problems because the audio setup is really tight and gets overloaded easily. Is that my problem? Or is it something else?

  • In Audacity under edit prefereces make sure the CHANNEL is set to 1 (mono) not 2.
  • Yeah, tried that already. Nothing worked on Audacity.

What solved it was to change my audio device to the RP150 ASIO. Audacity didn't have this option so I'm now using Reaper. Then it said \"USB\" instead of mono, stereo, left, right, etc. Not sure why that would work, but it did. Maybe I was previously using a crappy driver with really low buffer settings which were getting overdriven. That's my take.
