Country and Jazz Pickers - Who's your Idol??
As per my recent reply on another thread, I thought I would start up a discussion on the awsome country pickers that seem to be about these days. I've been a big fan of Brad Paisley since he hit the scene among many others. What I love is how these guys can switch onto the most amazing jazz stuff at the drop of a hat. Sure wish I could do that!

Country and jazz is so hard to play - there's no distortion to cover up mistakes and you have to be so precise. Its certainly a great discipline.
So I'm putting the questions out there to you - Who's your favourite picker and what gear configurations/settings have you come up with to get that twang factor happening??

There are a ton more but that is all I can think of at this time...
enjoy!
I agree with you Iliace - Albert Lee is great. I saw him here in Oz years ago in concert, was a jaw dropping show. However he had a picking duel with 2 Aussie guys named Tommy Emmanuel and Rod McCormack and got blown into the weeds! Tommy style covers pretty much everything while McCormack is just a speed machine, absolutely incredible!
If I remember rightly Albert had a great bass player..... Stirling something, can't remember his last name - can someone help me out? Must be getting old!
Oh, and what about those guys out of Boy Howdy? Can't remember their names either but the first time I heard them I went holy S**T!

Wes Montgomery
Stanley Jordan--is the one that blows my mind the most. I once saw
him play two guitars at once, one for ryhtm and
second for lead--amazing.
Country--The late great Chet Atkins
Roy Clark
He toured with Bob Wills for a couple of decades or so and was considered by many to be one of the finest guitar players ever.

Jazz.....Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith, and Wes.. The holy trinity...LOL..
You know I sorta brought this up a while ago, but there was no takers. I don't think there are any true twang masters anymore. Todays 'country ' is ..... Well imo repackaged 70's rock.
Seen the CMA a while back all I saw was LP's and Firebirds, maybe three Tele's counting Paisley's. Heard a few tracks off Paisley's latest.. Crap it is more Via sounding than anything. I had a hard time trying to figure out why they/he would put that out on a supposed country album. I reckon that is why we have recordings so the youngins can go on and do their thing and we can live in what was!
I'll add Steve Morse to the list. Only cuz he has a track on his 1st solo lp That just rips called General Lee 8)
Relax! .. The Albert/Alvin thing was a Joke!
Albert Lee rules!!!!
I think Alvin Lee's work on Goin' Home is face melting, and the stuff Albert Lee plays is mind bending. Albert Lee played with Clapton for a while towards the end of the \"Oklahoma\" band famous for the Tulsa Time song, I didn't know that little tid bit until I read Clapton's autobiography.
For some of the younger, post woodstock members here is the great Alvin Lee and that red 335.

Go Longhorns
I think you'll like this too - good 'ol Tommy Emanuel. He's getting a bit old these days but he's still awsome. And a nice guy to boot too. This song isn't proper 'country' so to speak but its worth a look just to see what he can do. A lot of country guys don't have Tommy's imagination or sense of adventure with a guitar
Enjoy!
MikeB--I'm with you on the Longhorns--I got to,once again, call my Aggies friend in Texas and gloat on that game.
Not really a country dude, as in old school twanging. But if I remember correctly, he always had one hot country licking tune on his lp's. But General Lee was always one track that made me go \"ya! 8) \" His solo stuff was more fusion rock type of stuff. So I guess he can go here under the jazz genre
