Wishing you a G.A.S.y Christmas

Ok, I have some money certificates to spend on Amazon.com. Just wondering if anyone would suggest items I might want to consider for myself, or the band, (before the wife gets a new coffee maker). Anyone seen some cool gadgets for this holiday season? I'm thinking that with the economy in the dumps, it might be a good year to buy early. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

For your consideration, I came accross this item http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Farleys-Stage-Player-Guitar-Stand-Stool?sku=452031, a guitar stand/stool that looks like it would function well in the practice room. It was a new item (to me) and looks like a good G.A.S.y purchase. So I ordered it from MF. But, I still have those Amazon.com certificates to burn, so let me know what you guys are looking at this season. Even if the product is not on Amazon.com, I could get the music product elsewhere and use those certificates for the wife's new cofffe maker on Amazon.com.

  • That chair is dam kewl. Way better than a coffee maker. :P

If I were me, I'd want this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Peterson-StroboStomp2-Pedal-Virtual-Strobe/dp/B000MSU7QC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1227068458&sr=1-2

But then again, I'm not married. If I were, I'd probably be getting this:

  • Those Peterson Strobe Tuners are in a class of their own but I'm happy with the tuner built into the GNX4 so I'd pass on that item.

By the way, Shredd. I ordered two bass guitars from MF. I got a short scale Ibanez Mikro http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-GSRM20-Mikro-Short-Scale-Bass-Guitar?sku=516148 and a Dean Edge 10A Active electonics http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Dean-Edge-10a-4String-Electric-Bass-with-Active-Electronics?sku=512156. I think I told you that I compared my old Kramer bass to the Peavey Grind at the local store. The Grind was much easier to play than my Kramer, but I actually prefered the tone/bite/crunch I got from a bass with active electronics. Anyway, the Dean Edge 10A is a much better bass than my old Kramer and I think I will be happy with it. The short scale Ibanez is really interesting. I have small hands, so I wanted to try out a short scale bass. But, I have found both bass guitars so much easier to play than my old Kramer that I am not sure I even need a short scale bass. I'm probably going to keep both guitars anyway. It is just amazing to me that even the inexpensive guitars nowadays are so much better than my older guitars. The quality of both these basses exceeded my expectations. If they hold tune, I'll be real happy.

By the way, MF had a \"Private Sale\" and I picked up both the bass guitars for about $280 total. The Dean Edge is every bit as good as the bass with active electronics at the local music shop for $450.00. At least, at my skill level I could not tell any difference.

And now I still have some certificates at Amazon.com to burn. So I hope you guys will throw out some other suggestions.
  • Well, this isn't really a musical instrument suggestion, but I find the little LED flashlights to be a godsend when looking at the mixing board or the back of equipment for proper plug-ins on stage. I usually keep two in my chord bag, but am now down to one. Need to pick up another soon.

  • I have a flashlight in one of my cord bags and I just got a wind-up gig light as a free gift from MF on my last purchase. Should be here later this week. I agree, flashlights are essential on stage.
  • +1 on lights. I have a nice one on my key chain, got it at one of those \"As Seen on TV\" stores. Very useful. Imagine playing a no-stage lawn gig at night, then looking for your cables.

NOTHING beats those little LED headlights you get at camping/sports stores. If you're secure enough in your manhood to wear this little geek-flag on your forehead, you'll forever have free hands. 8)

Speaking for myself - I find the GNX's tuner only minimally accurate...even my $15 Korg is better. I also gravely dislike trying to activate it with the \"two-footswitch\" punch.
Congrats on the new basses...both look like good deals, and even at entry-level quality, are probably still better than your old Kramer.
I still think you should come over and play my Peavey Cirrus. It'll wet your panties.

I'm laughing at myself because my guitar playing is also minimally accurate! But I also have other handheld and footswitch tuners. So I am good in that area.

As for the basses, it would be great to actually sit down with someone who knew about bass guitars and play and compare different models. The only two bass players I know around here both have bass guitars that are beyond my budget. One paid $800 for her bass and the other paid about $2000 for a used bass that he claims is worth about $3000. Both have active electronics. By the way, the better bass player is the one with the $800 bass guitar. In fact, even I am better than the guy with the \"$3000\" bass. He is a nice guy, and he has been playing bass longer than me, but as limited as I am, I still know I hold it down better than him. So, I know it's not all in the guitar. As I told you, I live in Northern Minnesota and the nearest Guitar Center is 5 hours by car. That really limits my ability to try out different models.

Thanks for taking the time to look at those bass guitars I did buy. I am just hoping that they will work for me until my skills improve to the point where I will need to consider another step up. Actually, I have a beautiful Yamaha 5 string bass sitting on my rack. I hope to someday be worthy of actually playing it. That guitar originally sold for $1600 at one time. I watched it drop down in price to $800 on MF, and then picked up one of the last ones left for around $400 on final clearance. But I'm not to the level where I feel that I would do a 5 string justice and the neck is wider and presents additional problems for me at my skill level. That's why I got another 4 string bass.

Still looking for ideas to burn my money on. Hoping that MF or Music123 or AMS come out with a flyer of \"Stocking Stuffer Suggestions\" or something like that. I know there must be new gadgets coming out for the Christmas season.
  • \"my guitar playing is also minimally accurate\". That's funny.
I had to respond - you couldn't possibly be more right that the instrument doth not the player make. I've posted in the past on this forum about how, when I was a teenager playing a crappy $129 LP copy that wouldn't stay in tune, intonate, or anything to sound good, a friend came over and simply shredded on it. And I've also relayed the SRV/Clapton story.
But as you become a better bass player, even with your little hands, you'll find a good instrument will let you play better. I don't know about the 5-string - it'd surely be a harder instrument to play with small hands, and frankly I don't see the point in extra-string basses for straight-up RnR - so maybe the hack with the $3000 bass will part with it??
  • Well, it's not like I have tiny hands, but playing a full scale bass definitely takes me to my physical limit on some stretches and runs. My friend with the \"$3000\" bass just started playing in another local band, so I know he would never part with his bass, even if I could afford it. Besides, it is one of those headless bass guitars, but not a Steinberger. But I don't much like the look of the headless guitars. He said it has 18 volt active electronics. It does sound good, but I really don't know how much of that is the guitar or his bass amp/cab. Which is why I plan on getting together with him someday and jacking into his amp to compare my bass(es) with his. If I can't get a good sound on my bass direct, I'll be looking at bass amps next. I'm hoping that going direct or through the GNX4 will give me a great sound out of the PA. If not, I still have gig money set aside for a new bass amp.
