Can't connect GNX1 to Vista PC by Midi/USB cable........

HELP......
I have had my GNX1 for a few years now and thought that it would be a really great idea to connect my GNX1 to my computer and download some patches. Sooooo I went and bought a Midi to USB cable online and then tried to connect it:

Problem 1
I am running Vista and have since read loads of threads about GenEdit and Vista not being compatable. Sooo as suggested I ran GenEdit in compatability mode (XP Service pack2) as suggested in these forums - the program seems to open - which it didn't before -

Problem 2
GenEdit comes up saying 'No compatable Digitech device found\".
Sooo I went trawling through the forums again and read allsorts of suggestions about swapping the Midi cables over to In-In and Out-Out rather than the In-Out Out-In way - no joy. I then tried putting a lead in the guitar input slot as someone said that this might help etc etc etc etc.
still no joy.

I am beginning to think that this was a really bad idea and wished I hadn't bothered - but now that I have got the cable and have started I don't want to be defeated and want to get it connected and get some patches on there- HELP
any suggestions please - will try anything - including throwing it all out the window to see if that helps!!

  • 1. What kind of USB Midi cable did you purchase?

    2. If an Maudio UNO or similar, are the drivers the most recent? Go to mfg website and verify.
  • Thanks for replying Guitar3456 - it's nice just to talk to someone - am getting so frustrated with this.
I have no idea what make the USB to Midi cable is - it doesn't have a name on it. I presumed that they were all the same????

It got even more annoying a while ago as most of the time it says there is no Digitech device found etc. Then a couple of times it said there is no reply from the device (suggesting that it found the device) then in the 'library' part of the GenEdit window it came up with GNX-1 on the list whereas before it was saying no device?????? So sometimes it seems to recognise that there is something there but can't commuincate with it and other times it does find it at all.

Just to clarify - how should it be connected - GNX1 switched on/off?
USB cable connected then open GenEdit or vice versa?
Midi In to Midi Out and Midi Out to Midi In?

    Any suggestings please
  • First, be absolutely sure you have the latest drivers for your midi usb device adapter. Some units connect MIDI IN> IN, OUT to Out ( MAUDIO for one). If yours recommends MIDI IN>OUT, Out to IN do it that way (most common).

After the drivers have been installed and your computer reports \"the hardware is ready to be used\" REBOOT

Connnect the GNX to the MIDI/USB adap, Activate GENEDIT (GNX1 is not supported with XEDIT). See of that works.

if the adapter is not working properly, go to your Control Panel> System> Hardware> Drivers tab. See if your USB MIDI adapter is on the list of the Device Manager. If it has an exclamation point or a ? mark next to the device in the list, it's not installed properly or the driver is not supported.

There are all sorts of problems with some Generic USB Midi cables you find on ebay etc. The super cheap ones won't work on the GNX, or any MIDI host unit like a keyboard, controller etc in my experience with them. The problems extend from latency, missed notes on keyboards, pads, and a host of communication errors.

Best bet is an Maudio UNO, EMU, Hosa, or similar midi usb device that is stand alone. The drivers are specific to that Midi USB adapter so it does not matter what MIDI device is connected. USB conversion can be made so long as the drivers support that hardware.

Other users have reported using other sources like PCI cards with serial joystick ports and a serial to midi cable with no problems.

I wished the makers of pc's would support MIDI again !
  • Thanks Guitar3456.
Really informative - I will get it all out and set up again and try what you've said. I did get the USB/Midi cable off eBay - thought they were all basically the same and would have thought that they could all transport data between Midi and USB devices - after all isn't that their only reason for existence!
I didn't try rebooting after installing it all - so a day later after the cable, PC and GNX1 have all had a chance to have a lie down I'll give it another try - will let you know if it works.
Thanks for your assistance - very grateful.

  • Please help people,
I have now gone and got a Midisport Uno from Midiman (M-Audio) (as suggested) and downloaded the drivers for Vista from their website and still the sodding thing doesn't work.
I have it all plugged in with the drivers all installed correctly and then I open GenEdit via the Compatibility Mode (XP SP2) and it says no compatible Digitech device found like it did with the cheaper cable, except that it's cost me a load more money now - please help me.
  • Have you contacted Digitech support yet?

Sometimes there are dll files and other things specific to your hardware that may create setup or install issues. Check with Shane at Digitech to see what answers he may have for you.

From what most gather here, common usb generic midi/usb adapters successful operation varies quite a bit. There are sometimes other resources running in the Win environment that cause these problems.

Vista should have auto recognized the Maudio device, or have found it's drivers immediately. It did on my PC, and that's the bigger battle for most users. Once that device is operational, CONNECT the Midi IN to IN of GNX and OUT to Out (for that UNO unit). See if the MIDI lights are ON the UNO. Restart Genedit program for the GNX. See if the UNO lights flicker.

Just remember that the GENEDIT program was facilitating WIN 98 up to XP (which had it's fill of issues). Digitech support had many files and dll's users could add to their Digitech folder in Prog Files directory that aided their usage depending upon their hardware and Win environment.

I have many other hardware devices that vendors have not yet created, nor do they plan on adding Vista support. Some of these devices are 5-8 years old and expecting them to serve a new OS for discontinued products is going to be a rarity.

Try those things and see what happens.
