X-edit, use USB or midi?

Hi, I must say I have researched this decision and can't figure out the method. Some posts say use the USB port and others keep mentioning the midi way. So, do I do all the messaging between my unit and the computer via midi or USB. I don't mean to be too harsh, but someone needs to explain this better for the new user, because I use midi a lot now in Reaper and understand how to utilizie it. Anyway, thanx for listening, sure you can assist me, psingman

  • X-Edit works via USB. Not MIDI. The MIDI on GNX4 and GNX3000 is implemented via USB, and X-Edit gets its own MIDI port.
  • Thanks, Iliace, but then you need to use midi for X-edit. I am still not grasping this, using 2 types of inputting. Is there somewhere where it is explained? If so, please direct me. I will use USB this afternoon and hook up the GNX 3000 to the studio computer....hope it all works. Also, thanks to all those that mentioned using Net Framework as I checked and my computer doesn't have it, don't know what it is but had to put it on my older computer for something like this also. psingman

What are you talking about. There is only one. USB. That will carry all needed MIDI channels, don't even think about it as MIDI. It's USB.

What part of that is not clear?
  • Ok, will do. I don't know why I kept thinking you needed to use MIDI, guess because I use it a lot in Reaper, esp. for EZdrummer. I think a lot of newer users overthink these things, but, to be honest, from working in the studio, getting all the equipment setup is the hardest part, and working properly, then you can make some music. Gettin' to it, psingman
  • Some of the things and descriptions can be confusing to a new user of this type of equipment.

For working within the editor XEDIT and for pc recording interface, the GNX3000 uses it's USB communications port. That is what is needed to control the audio stream data and the editor function utility.

MIDI can be used with a SYSYEX librarian to perform bulk dumps of presets if you wish to save them in that fashion. SYSEX (System Exclusive) librarians are Midi librarian programs like MIDI OS. Not many use this method for backups and restore of presets, but it is available. Most prefer to use the Backup and Restore features of the XEDIT program via USB.

The second thing to use midi on the GNX3000 is for program change commands or CC's. See page 120 in the manual. The GNX can only receive midi CC commands from other devices. Keyboards, controllers, synth pads, etc. Should a player that uses an external device like a keyboard want to control a GNX3000 patch change or internal parameter, they can via MIDI.

Not to lose you with MIDI CC's since they can be a little intimidating. The list of MIDI CC messages the GNX3000 supports is on page 129.

  • Wow, thanks for all the enlightenment. I think what happened was I read too many posts about that midi-usb thingie and I started assuming stuff. I don't even have USB 2.0 on most of my computers. I guess I am going to have to buy a new or newer one. However, I have everything hooked up and working well in the studio, so must leave well enough alone, wisdom of studio work.

I am having so much fun, playing around with the GNX3K, it is amazing. I am making a lot of my own patches, as I have figured out what sounds best on a cd from making my last 3. Now, for playing out, that is a different story, will make some more powerful patches. I also made some for playing through my old Peavey tube amp from 1977. You are all right though, the unit works better if you use a keyboard amp, mixer, speaker combo and whatever FRFR means, haha, reenlighten me. Thanks for the assistance, psingman
