Guitar Maintanance

i have two electric guitars and i would like to keep em lookin good. i noticed the chrome pieces starting to fade to black and by favorite guitar that i play almost exclusively has almost oval shaped markings between the frets, probably where ive worn down the wood. any tips on what to use to clean em. i would also like to use things i dont nessesarily have to buy as im broke, thanks

    Git'r maintenance costs money...deal with it...unless you know someone that's giving away free strings... 8)
    The \"oval\" marks on your fretboard are probably worn areas from your fingertips. The oils from your skin combine with dust and general crud and gum up the wood of your fretboard, and it's worst where your fingers are the most. Unless you want to resurface your fretboard, the best you can do about that is give your fingerboard a good deep cleaning with lemon oil. It's cheap - don't get it from a music store, you can get a little bottle of the same stuff at the grocery or the hardware store. Use soft, clean rags, and get waaaay into the wood at the base of the frets. Don't be lazy, this is something you haveta do a good job at, or don't bother.
    The chrome pieces fading to black either means it was mfg'd with cheap chrome plating; or else they're being contaminated with something. Use ordinary chrome polish - you can get good stuff cheap at the grocery store (the stuff you get to polish household fixtures, etc), and it's usually gentler than the car stuff.

    And if your wife's hott single friend needs any \"pointers\", have her call me. :twisted:
  • i dont clean strings because i switch tunings so often that new strings only stay on for a month tops so theyre fine, i am worried about cleaning the chrome because other people with the guitar i have said that the paint around the chrome tends to come off, so lemon oil and chrome polisher is all i need?

    There are those who claim boiling your strings in vinegar extends their life, makes 'em sound like new. WhatEVer...strings are cheap and there's no more cost-effective way to make your ax sound good.
    As far as chrome polish taking paint off...well, that's one cheezy-azz paintjob. If you're concerned about it, just be very careful about polishing chrome that meets the finish.

    For what it's worth, even if you're not into deep string-cleaning, you should wipe down your neck and strings with a soft cloth after every jam...it takes 5 seconds, and actually WILL extend the life of your strings.
    And play with clean hands. :shock:

    And the gneral consensus is that decent strings will last 25-35 hours of playing time...
  • i have make a practice of wiping down the guitar neck and washing my hands or at least rinsing them before playing guitar. i hate that slick feeling of a neck with sweaty hands. i keep an old shirt laying around to wipe the guitar with and find that does the trick. as for boiling the strings in vinegar, as much as a new pair of strings make the guitar feel brand new, id rather dip my guitar in a airport toilet than smell boiling vinegar

    :lol::lol::lol:

    PS old tshirts are the best for this. I actually use those Wms/Sonoma potato sack cloths, super soft.
