VL-2 issue - noise when using tuner

Since I see some us have the VL-2, I was wondering about this. When I enter tuner mode, I get a pretty bad hum into the amp. It's bad enough that I can't leave the thing in tuner mode very long. I am running out to a Crate CA-125D, and I have a mic and guitar connected to the VL-2 and then have outs from the VL-2 to the Crate. I use XLR cables on the mic and regular 1/4 inch unbalanced cables on the guitar. Anyone else have this happen and deal with it?

I havent had that issue. Theres a ground lift button on the back of the VL-2. Does that have any effect at all?

My harmonie pedal quit working and I had to take it in for service. Turns out a can of air was all it took to clean up the contacts.
  • I noticed that was there. I'll give it a shot tonight. I got my open mic that I host tonight, so it'll be a good chance to check it out.
  • The ground lift button seems to cure the issue. I forgot to take the VL along tonight, so I'llt ry it out tomorrow with the full rig and make sure its solved.

    SAWEET :!: 8)
  • Well, when I went into the full rig, I still had issues. But, its fixed now. Here is the rig:

    Guit>Digi ToneDriver>JamMan>>VL2>>Aphex Acoustic Exciter>>CrateCA125D
    Mic>>VL2>>Crate CA 125D

So last night, I tried Guit>VL2>CA 125D, and had no issues. When I tried the ground lift button, I did get noise in one position, no noise in the other. So, today with the full rig, I got everything set up, and the noise was there when I tried the VL-2 tuner. Well, it turns out, the Aphex Exciter has a ground lift, too. When I put that in the other position, the noise went away. So, problem solved, finally.
  • It's best to run the guitar straight into the VL2 then out to any other pedals you are using. the more direct signal the better.
  • I know, but I got to have the JamMan in front of the VL-2 so I can make a loop to then play lead over, and I can't have the tone driver after the VL-2 or it will distort the loop, which is not what I want. I play a loop on acoustic, activate the JamMan, which runs it through the VL-2, giving the possibility of harmonies to the vocals based on the loop chords, and then I play lead on top of the loop. Simple, huh?

Anyhow, as I found, the noise was from the exciter and/or the VL-2 creating one or more ground loops, which are eliminated when the right combination of on/off is slected for the ground lift on each device.
  • 8) Loopers are cool I do an acoustic/electric duo thing and thats the first thing were are gonna buy with our gig money next week a looper/delay pedal for my acoustic but I think I want the new http://www.digitech.com/products/Hardwire/HW_DelayLooper.php

20 sec is plenty long for us and the fact its a small single unit pedal is cool cause I'm starting to get too much stuff at my feet. I use a shortboard for my amps effects and a VL-2 for my vocals. I have a boss footpedal to switch beats on my dr3 drum manchine its all starting to be too much stuff. ...also the delays and the delay with chorus added wll be useful on most other tunes.
  • I can see 20 seconds working for playing lead over metal riffs, but it wouldn't really work for me doing blues, with 12, 16 and 24 bar patterns. It is cool, though to have the delays in there. It definitely makes it a very cool delay pedal.

Last night, I found out I had a delay effect I didn't even know about. I set up the Crate CA-125D at the open mic, and fired it up, and here was this echo. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, as there is no delay knob. Upon close inspection, I saw that my reverb type had gotten moved, off of \"spring\" and, yes, duh, one of the other \"reverb\" options was \"delay.\"

Ah yes...I remember the day I found out girls were useful for things other than pigtail-pulling...ain't the thrill of discovery just exhilarating?? :P

PS: +1 w/ageless. If you've got a heavily effected signal running into your VL2, it's going to be harder for it to recognize pitch.

And +1 on loopers. I love 'em. they make me sound like I can play. Chix dig that. 8)
