Does anyone have any idea how to replicate

The lead guitarists sound in the song \"12:51\" by The Strokes?
It sounds like just a distorted guitar, but has a certain brightness to it that I can't figure out. I also thought it could be something to do with the pickups, like using the neck pickup and playing the riff around the 12th fret area. I just think its a cool sound and want to figure it out.
Any help is appreciated

  • Learn to knob-twiddle. XEdit is useful for this, since it's very visual. Learn what the different controls do. Or buy the SuperModels.
  • I saw a cover group guitarist play that. He played real close to the bridge for more twang. More in the are between the pickup and the bridge/saddles. That guy was using a Les Paul but the orig guitarist he said had a 335 and played the same way.

well, just watched a video of this song. Watch the guitarist playing Strat between bridge pickup.

For the lead sound, use your neck p-up and try a crunch amp with sparkeldrive stomp. Set the tone of the sparkeldrive to your liking. Cut the tone control some on the guitar if you have one.

If you want a swelling effect add compression with a setting sim to this: attack Slow Ratio 2:1 Thrsh 30-35 level at unity gain ( same as when comp is off).

Some of the brightness could be added with presence control. i think most of the bright sound is from the hollw body guitar the orig lead player is using.
  • Thanks for the tips
    I'll give it a shot
