Mangling The Classics #14

This, my compadres, is a true mangling.
While playing another song, I realized the structure was the same as this one (which I've always liked), so I decided to take a crack at it. Another quicky, over-the-weekend thing.
The playing actually went well...it was the singing, as usual, that took the worst mangling. With a chest cold that would kill a hippo, my normally sad singing voice became downright frightening. Not that I ever let that stop me...
Plus, the drums got really tinny during conversion to MP3...good 'ol Windows. They sounded great before...
So...I hope you can listen to this cringe-worthy effort without gouging your ears out with dull pencils...

Done all on GNX4 (except for Roland KB riff and \"vocals\"). Ibanez RG3, Dean Exotica ac/el, Peavey Grind bass, Behringer dynamic mic, ZOOM drums.

  • I liked it Shredd! Good job bro! I can tell you did have a cold like you said. Other than that well done! 8) :D
  • Now that I've posted it for you all to hear, I gave it another listen and am just aghast at the vocals. No wonder Elizabeth doesn't love me anymore.
  • You call that mangling? and by sad are you referring to the mood. Your voice is strong, let it go, work the crowd, spill the emotion and keep em coming.

Thanks pal...unfortunately, that's as strong as my voice gets with a cold like this. It's Tuesday now, and I've stopped barfing up lung chunks at last.
And by \"sad\", I mean pathetic. You'll see what I mean if I can ever get the songbird over to my house to sing on the trax I have in the can. Now THERE'S a singing voice.
    *************
Ugh. Oh my gawd...I just listened to it again. I have nightmarish visions of singing this in a club while Rosie Perez, Fran Drescher, Gilbert Gottfried and Bjork all cringe and cover their ears.
Forgive me, for I have committed the sin of The Hideous Cover. I must repent and atone for my transgression.
  • Shredd,
Good job on the music. It sounded good to me.
I might not have panned the bass as much left as you did,but it sounded fine. Nice tone on the bass part as well.
  • Hi Shredd, I finally got a chance to lay me ears on this. Sorry you are feeling kinda poorly, hope you get over it soon.

I liked the chours and bright sound of your guitar. Did you use a single coil? It has been a long time since I have heard that song, and it was good to hear it again, thanks for the post. We cannot all be Steve Perry, he has a unique talent. Keep postin, I'll keep listenin.

    peace
  • You could tell your voice was off, but that didn't stop Bob Dylan or Bon Scott did it? Great song.

It's Thursday now, my chest is starting to clear a bit. And now I sound like my usual pitiful self. :?
Glad you liked the tune though, it's one of my ol' Journey faves. I used my Ibanez RG3 through a preset I made myself...I did indeed use the coil tap on my DiMarzio's. I also had \"capo-ed\" my git'r up 5 steps instead of playing it on open strings (as written) 'cuz I can't sing in Steve Perry's range. (Who can??)
Now that my chest is clearing, I can go back to mangling classics at my ordinary level.
  • Shredd my man, I love Lenard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix for their playing *and* unique vocals.

There's moments where you sound like \"the band's\" Robbie Roberston. Granted you fall off here and there but the potential is there.

Never say \"mangled\" when it comes to vox...this was your mood and rendition at the time. You will no doubt have many versions.
  • I redid the vox on this one, and they sounded MUCH better when I wasn't hacking up lung chunks between verses. I'm just not a Steve Perry. If I was, I'd not only sing better, but I'd be pretty. Chicks dig that. Right?
I also redid the synth riffs, and I'd hoped to add some piano, but I can't seem to get a \"real\" piano sound out of my ol' Roland, and I'm a lame KB player anyway.
All in all, it turned out to be a half-decent cover, not the best ever, but at least I wouldn't need chicken wire in front of the stage...
