Using a master keyboard controller with the GNX4

Hi all,

I am considering getting an 88-key MIDI keyboard for synths and such, with lots of sliders and rotary controls to send MIDI events to my GNX4. I don't gig, just do a little jamming at home, and I have some decent software synths so I don't need a synthesizer, just a keyboard controller.

Initially I considered the M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 because of its tremendous control power, but a lot of reviews point out the keyboard itself as being crummy. Then I found the CME UF80 USB 88 which has less controls but a much better keyboard, including aftertouch. It is also pricier.

Has anyone had any experience controlling a GNX4 with any of these or a similar one in this class and price range? Is there any merit to using a master controller as compared to a footswitch such as the Fender Cyber MIDI or the Roland FC-300?

Thanks,
Peter

  • i have 6 synthesizers of various caliber and over 12 soft synths.I use an EMU x-board49 and never thought about using it as a controller for the gnx4 because i am fully happy with the way it works for itself 8)
  • What I had in mind was being able to tweak params like vibrato depth, warp or pitch shift dry/wet mix. With only one expression pedal this is not possible. I could mount the GNX on a keyboard stand but then I'll lose it as a FC... Hence the need for a controller within reach. I also want a keyboard for strings, synths and the occasional piano part.

I only have space for one unit and since I'm at entry level there's no point in spending tons for pro equipment. Hence I'm looking for a somewhat decent budget keyboard + master controller that I can use to control the GNX4.

    Thanks,
    Peter
