Where to get CF cards?? Best size for average use??
Well, as the topic implies...I'm looking to get a (several?) CF cards in anticipation of my GNX4 delivery soon....and since I've never used them in any capacity...was looking for advice on where to get them, what size, and other details which I'm sure I'm overlooking.
Thanks.
Thanks.

2GB card will allow 6 hrs or more of recording time. That depends on other files you have stored along in other folders.
Midi data does not take much room, nor do the preset storage. MP3 and media formats will eat up space.
99 Song capability for recording
99 MP3 song storage for backing tracks, jam alongs.
The only exception I could name would be the idea I went with for a while: I have a handful of small (32MB) CF cards that I loaded up with preset/patch \"sets\" that I could use for different purposes, just by popping the right card in. I had one full of rock/electric patches, one full of bass presets, one full of the ones I used for acoustic/open mic nights, and so on.
And of course, the one with all my sound clips like \"Phoenix, are you ready to ROOOCK???\" and \"All hott groupies form a line to the left..\"
For many reasons, I'd just get the 2GB CF card which is the maximum capacity that the GNX4 will recognize. You should be able to get them for less than $20. I don't live next to some of the big box stores like others, but I have gotten some really good deals at www.newegg.com. If you go mail order, I think they are pretty good. Best wishes.
I've been comparing the 2G cards from Newegg, and other sites/stores, but can't really see a difference from brand to brand, can you explain, or share your opinion, of why an \"A-Data\" 2G card is like $9.99, but a \"SanDisk\" 2G card is like $34?
Do they both do the same thing, the same way?
Or is the more you pay, the better/faster/whatever, the card?
I bought a 1G card, when I bought my GNX4, and I haven't even filled it up yet, in almost 6 months, already. I'd rather have more space and not need it, that need it and not have it.
If the cheap cards work the same, I'd rather just stock up on them.
Sometimes CF cards cost more 'cuz they're rated at higher speeds, which is very useful for digital cameras et all, but consensus here at the forum is that high-speed cards don't perform any better in GNX's than ordinary cards.
Like I said above, the price diff between 1 and 2 GB is so small, it's TOTally worth having the exra space, even if you never use it. Remember how big a 6GB hard drive used to sound?
You'd think Digitech would include at least a minimum-sized CF card with the GNX4 where it's basically a necessity for recording etc.
Eh..it only cost like $11 shipped...not like it's a big deal lol....
Thanks all
I bought a couple of the 2GB A Data CF cards and they work just fine. I don't know if there is really any difference between the brands. For all I know, they slap on a different label on the CF card with different brands. Again, I have all kinds/brands of CF cards and never had any go bad. The cheap ones work as well as the expensive cards.
I use the 2GB cards because I record all our gigs which are 4+ hours long. It is nice to just hit the record button once and know that I have 6.5 hours of recording time left (mono recording of the gigs).
Some people get hung up on the speed issue with the new CF cards. I just remind people that the GNX4 was built for the CF cards at 1X speed, so if you chose to buy the more expensive 80X+ CF cards, you will not see any improvement as far as the GNX4 is concerned. Anyway, I don't think you could even buy a 1X CF card anymore, they are all much faster than that. If you plan on using your CF card in other newer devices, you may consider the faster read/write speeds. But the GNX4 doesn't care.
Someone complained about Digitech not including a CF card with the GNX4. When I got my GNX4, a 2GB CF card cost over $100. Now the price is under $20. My first 2GB CF card cost me $80 and at the time, I got a good deal. My most recent purchase was about $14 for a 2GB CF card.
For the difference in price, I'd recommend everyone just buy the 2GB CF cards. Even if you don't use the whole CF card for the GNX4, you always got extra to use for storage. You can also use your GNX4 in CF mode with the computer and store other music files, tabs, books, etc... on the CF card if you really wanted.
Although it might not be the smallest portable recorder, the GNX4 does a great job recording in either stereo or mono through the 1/4\" line inputs directly from a mixing board. You can easily work on your PA mix to get a great demo recording of your band. It is much cleaner than using the old cassette tapes like we did back in the day.... Also, working with a .wav file in the audio programs today is much better than dealing with the tapes like we used to do.
Although the GNX4 has a limit of 99 mp3 files it will read in the mp3 directory, it doesn't really care if any one mp3 file is 3 minutes long or 3 hours long. So you can append mp3 files together with software programs to make 15 minute break music for your gigs, or, what I like to do, is just dump a complete album as one long .mp3 file on the CF card and let the GNX4 play that album from start to finish. I haven't done the math, but I bet you could stack up a couple days of .mp3 music album files if you just dumped the entire album as one big .mp3 file on the GNX4. The longer I have my GNX4, the more things I think of to do with it. Best wishes.
It wasn't a complaint, more like an observation...like \" you'd think they'd include one for the convenience of the user\"....sorta like buying a guitar amp without knobs on the pots lol...maybe they would come in handy.
Good Information Here!
More than I expected, but clarified and well explained. As always, much appreciated!!!
Fair enough. I guess I should have said \"Someone commented...\" At any rate, now that CF cards are so cheap, I would agree that Digitech could easily throw in a CF card with the GNX4 to get people started. It might help with sales, I would think. When I can buy a 2GB CF card for less than $20 retail, I can only imagine how much it must cost a manufacturer and/or a wholesaler for these CF cards. My point was that when I bought my GNX4 a couple of years ago, I knew that the CF card was extra and a large 2GB CF card would cost over $100. Today, CF cards are dirt cheap (in comparison) and I too think it makes sense to throw in a CF card for the customer. After all, I still want Digitech to sell new units of the GNX4 and continue to support the box. Best wishes.
i was recording and saving a cards worth of info and wiping it clean and doing more recording, then saving,.................in the end,i had 3 256 cards and what i would do is go into a file and copy card 1-card 20 and keep it freshly rotated
