New Lead Singer for Journey.... WOW

Ok, I grew up loving Journey, guilty pleasure. But Neal Schon has always been a huge influence as to why I play guitar now...

So was checking some info out and new they were looking for a new lead singer and they signed this guy and he is absolutely amazing. Will need some fine tuning, but WOW. This is guy is good.

  • No need to be \"guilty\" about that pleasure. The disdain of metalheads and hard rockers aside - Journey was an inSANely talented band. Steve Smith is a VERY underrated drummer, and Gregg Rollie and Ross Valory were both much better players than they were ever given credit for. Steve Perry is a once-in-a-lifetime voice, and of course Schon is a great shredder, also very underrated. I saw them live a coupla times and was always blown away at how well they played, especially considering that studio work and production values are their \"strong suits\".
But how no one talked Gregg Rollie out of those pants during the group photo shoot is one of the great mysteries of time.
They sadly went the commercial/schlock route when the original lineup parted...hey, if a record company was waving suitcases of money at me, I'd probably have done it too. But that's where their reputation really suffered.
This new kid - nice voice, needs some seasoning, but a good fit I'm sure. And asian - it's kind of cool to see these boundaries get crossed. If American marketing execs had anything to say about it, Journey's new vocalist would've been a Beyonce/ParHilton clone with a chest like Shania Twain. HOPEfully able to sing, too...
  • I like him better than the last 2 guys they've had...still miss Steve though......the original is never 100% replaceable

THAT's for sure. And it isn't just the singer either. Another of my favorite - and drastically underrated - bands of the 80's is Kansas. I saw them 3 times in the mid 80's and they RAWKED, their \"Leftoverture\" show is in my top 10 concert experiences out of over 300.
Then they showed up in my town in the late 90's, down from the original 6-piece to a 4-piece, with Steve Walsh (lead vocalist) the only remaining original member.
And they were SOOOOOO bad, it was like staring at the sun. You didn't want the awful show to taint your good memories. Tragic.
  • new Journey WOULD be cool but i wore the grooves out of frontiers 3 times in high school and to hear something less exciting would be a let down of sorts :( .I wanna see Zebra :!:
  • That's Incredible!! Dude is hitting that stuff perfect! 8)
  • Yeah, Journey. Really liked their songs when I was back in college until the local rock station killed the group (for me) by overplaying them. To this day, I still have heard 'too' much Journey thanks to the overplay back then.

I still can't listen to Michael Jackson's \"Thriller\" recording for the same overplay reasons - not his other problems. And although I considered Michael Jackson one of the great performers for his kind of music, his music got too much airplay and it hurt him, IMHO, for many people I know. Again, this was all before his other problems.

But I swear our local top 40 radio station just played the same 20 songs over and over and over and over and over and over....... Get the point? Take care.

    Overplay can be a killer

ABSOLUTELY - overplay can kill even the kewlest song. Look at \"Long Distance Runaround\". :?
The cure for you, dear 'taus, is to borrow some of Journey's less commercially popular albums and dig a bit. They've done some great stuff. Even their \"big\" albums have some pretty cool 'non-radioplay' stuff....

That's a good suggestion. I'll have to look around and see if I can find some of their other music. At this point, I only have their greatest hits double CD which my wife really likes. Take care.

Oh lawdy. Someone who lives near 'taus go rescue him. Quick.
Now, there are those who love their really early stuff, even before Steve Perry got there. Horse puckey - the guy's got the best set o' pipes since Brad Delp. The key is to go past the \"hits\" and singles and listen to the other stuff. For example, try songs like \"When You're Alone (It Ain't Easy)\" (my personal theme song   ), \"Lady Luck\", \"Do You Recall\", stuff like that. There's a short instrumental called \"Majestic\" that is killer, makes a great opener for a show or a set or an encore. But you need guyz that can sing...
And stop letting your wife pick the songs.:lol:
  • My favorite is \"Look Into the Future\" I still get it out once and awhile and listen in amazement. Never get tired of hearing early pre-Steve Journey.

  • Journey, Kansas, Styx, Foreigner, RUSH (got free tickets for next month's concert, already! 8) ), yeah, the 70's/80's bands are my inspirations for learning to play instruments, too!

I saw Journey in '05/'06, and Neal opened the show with The Star Spangled Banner, as everyone stood with pride, as a tribute to the US soldiers in Iraq!
I'll never miss another Journey concert, because they represent American patriotism, as well as being Rock Legends!

Funny about overplaying songs on the radio, but I can listen to CD's for days/weeks/months, without wearing them out, just to learn the songs! I think it's different when you just listen to it, compared to when you can actually play it, and enjoy it that much more, would you agree?
  • Journey \"Captured\" is there live album that raps up my favorite time in Journeys carreer and the last album with former Santa keyboardist (Ross Valory) Gotta checkout DIXIE HIWAY! that song so RAWKS. listen to the shred man... all the b songs on evolution are outfreekin standing. Vocals of course but the guitar work of Neal Shaun is just tastey. Here is some of the best melodic Les Paul ever. OK I Like journey just cant listen to'em much anymore. a new live show would be awsome!
  • Gregg Rollie was the KB player, and Ross Valory was the bassist. Both EXcellent and very underrated players. 8)
