Spybot should get rid of a lot of nasty stuff, but you may need to take additional steps to get rid of anything that persists. The McAfee suite is very good IMO, but again you may have the odd nasty thing left hanging around. If you do have a persistant problem after running these appz than do a search online to see what the process is for removing the remaining items.
Finally, use the Spybot immunize function to help prevent further issues.
Before you go crazy most of that junk is in the TEMP folder and Temp Internet folder. You can try Control Panel> Int Options and clearing all history, temp files, etc.
Next you want to go to your folder options and select \"show hidden folders\".
now go to MY COMP> Loc Disc C > Doc and settings > selct the user name. If more than one user is logged there will be the same folders in the Local Settings and repeat below for each user.
Local Settings will be ghosted (hidden file). Now purge that folder by opening it up and deleting the contents of Folder CONTENT IE5. That's where most of your junk is. They will have loads of folders and files. Delete each one. EMPY THE RECYCLE BIN
Once those are clear, Run the AVG program. It may not show any viruses but if it locates one and you cannot remove it, reboot with SAFE mode and see if those TEMP files reappear. If not, you should be clean unless Viruses were dropped elsewhere. Always check any downloaded media files.
Most of the malware and spyware should have resided in the TEMP directory. Once you finish the scan adn it's free of bugs do this:
Go to Start> All programs> Accessories> Sys Tools> Disk Cleanup
Empty the Recycle bin
Go to the same Accesories area and run the DISK DEFRAG utility. See how PC performs after that step..
If you have Viruses that messed with the registry you could buy a registry cleaner utility. If it's really bad, backup your files AFTER you have ran the viral scan with no instances of viruses reported. Save your files and then Reinstall Windows after formatting the HDD.
Hopefully you won't have to format. That's not fun. Avoid if you can unless you only have a few files or prgrams you can easily reinstall.
I've had real good success with BitDefender. www.bitdefender.com
It updates itself every hour and seems to catch all the spyware and viruses that I've encountered. It also lets me know whenever any program is trying to make changes to the registry. And it doesn't slow down my system like other antivirus programs.
Hi, the best one available is free, Its called sysgate you can control individual applications as you wish. You can block, ?, or give full access.
It does what it is supposed to do and for free you can't beat it.
If it's really badly infected it's often quicker and easier to format this disk & start again....
Agreed. Would add that many times it is the also the best route to take. I have a separate computer just for recording. It only runs my recording software and select players. It is not hooked up to the internet. That way it never gets infected. Running anti-virus software in the background might cause some problems with your recording. I avoid it all by not using my recording computer on the internet and therefore I don't even have background virus checkers running. It works for me. Take care.
Thanxs everyone!!! Ill try everything till my head exploads or my computer works normal again. I Really shouldnt go online being my only computer for recording but this site alone is so useful! Peace, Pussy,Pot!
