Mangling The Classics #12

This is a REAL mangle job. And on a RUSH tune, no less  ...normally I don't touch their stuff 'cuz they're so dam good and I'm so bad, and it's kinda like blasphemy. And kinda hard to sing, too... :?
But I was foolin' around this afternoon while trying to get the CD writer on my beloved Tascam to read/write CDRW's and not just CDR's.
And this was the pitiful result. Now you know why I wanna meet someone who can SING!!!
Hopefully some of you old guyz will recognize this tune...if I haven't mangled it TOO badly!

Done entirely on GNX4, with my Dean ac/el, Roland Juno-60, and a cheap Nady dynamic mic.

REPOSTED, using my MXL condenser for vocals. Better sound, same awful singing. Sorry Geddy...

Thanks partch...you're probably just not old enough to have heard it. Half the guys on this forum weren't even born when this was written! It's the final segment of one of RUSH's old album-side-length epics. Nice little piece, but recording it demonstrated to me how feeble my singing is, or at least my ability to create a decent vocal sound when I record...to me, my vocals ALL sound like this. :?
So why does't LeeAnn Rimes call me back when I invite her to record with me???
  • This is from my favourite Rush album of all time.
    Hemispheres

The Sphere A Kind of Dream

Great version Shredd 8) although it is hard to sing like Geddy.

Yah, great album alright! I love early RUSH stuff...they didn't put out anything less than excellent until Counterparts, maybe Roll The Bones...
  • Just reposted with a newly recorded vocal. I used my MXL condenser mic this time...much better sound, same awful singing.
The link is up at the top.
    Forgive me, Geddy...
  • I like better every listen. nice emotion in voice.
  • Ditto I have to agree with Densco on that I listened quite a few times at home last night to both. Even did some youtubing to hear this tune from some others I was thinking hopefully Rush to hear the original BUT could not find it?? I realy think you did a great job on both!! 8) The second one sounds a little cleaner did you do some reverb or something to it? Sounds considerbly different from thr first even more so than it's just a different \"better\" mic? Anyhoe great job Shredd keep em comming man 8)
  • That was great! I was back in High school doing unspeakable things! 8)

First ver. was done fairly clean with a cheap Nady mic. I thought it was awful. So the next day I rerecorded a few takes of the vocals with my MXL990 condenser mic, which is sparkly clean but of course also reveals every micro-flaw there is. I used a hint of reverb and a teeny bit o' delay; I also used a light phaser set to 0 speed, almost like a filter. Then recorded at low levels, singing real close-up to the mic (with a condenser this sensitive, you can stand across the room and sing if you want), and what you hear is how it came out. I dig RUSH so much, I'd love to do more of their stuff, but I don't have the voice OR the chops.:?
The re-do was better, but I still don't think I'd play this for Geddy...
