IRC Chat

I was just wondering if there was an IRC Chat channel dedicated to the GNX for discussing the equipment, patches etc...?

Comments

  • I tried to get one going yrs back and it floundered
  • Who has the time these days to sit in front of your computer all day long just to monitor an IRC channel for valuable content? I certainly don't. Sure, I'm at a computer all day, but I'm usually elbow deep in code and don't have time to participate in real time chat.

Even if you log your channels it could take hours to parse through them to find what you want. At that point why not participate on a community forum like this one? Once posted the information is semi-permanently available and accessible via advanced search functionality provided by the forum software. Search at your liesure.

I'm 42, and I use to enjoy IRC back in the mid 90's (mod music, ScreamTracker, BBS coders, etc). These days though, it seems that IRC is for \"script-kiddies\", hackerz, and \"L33T wanna-be's\". The only chats worth a damn are the ones hosted and moderated in some sort of official capacity (eg: gaming companies 'house of commons' style, moderated, where game developers take/answer questions fielded by authorized channel members). Otherwise all you get is pissing contests and ePeen posturing between dim witted, numb nutted, pre-pubescent nitwits who think they know everything.

I'll stick with community forums, thanks. =)

    Well said!

It was just a question, I was not looking for a dissertation as to the negative impact of IRC and its many pitfalls. Appreciate your response.

You got one anyway. You're welcome.

Don't like it? Don't post on public forums. Stick with IRC so you don't have to read what's posted while you're not there.

Clue: Would you prefer someone simply said \"No, it's a stupid idea\"?

Gotcha. Keep things \"simple stupid\" for Murrph67. CHECK!
  • would probably be more fun to get a Ventrilo channel going... 8)
  • Murrph67: Don't read this. It's probably too long for your liking.

I have a 50 slot server I keep in service at all times. It's mostly for my Warcraft gaming guild to use during guild events and raids, but guild members are welcomed to use it to communicate with friends/family outside of the game if they want.

It's good for certain things, and can be quite fun, but definitely not a replacement for forums in my opinion. Real time chat, be it voice or text, is only useful while you're present to participate. Anyone not there chances missing out on valuable information.

Can you imagine if the information on these forums had been delivered in either IRC or on Ventrilo? Man...that's a LOT of invaluable information forever lost in the ether, and only available if someone asks, and even then...only if someone remembers.

    /end another dissertation.

Wow, getting a little harsh here....

I don't think anyone is questioning the value of this forum. There is a ton of information in here. Some of which even I posted.

But that doesn't mean that IRC or even Ventrilo doesn't have it's place. Every tool has it's place.

Besides, wouldn't it be cool to get into a channel and \"talk\" shop with a bunch of guitar freaks!?! 8) Real time chats are alot more productive time wise (when you have the right group of people) compared to a forum. I mean, you don't have to wait hours for someone to reply to your thread. The forum is better because it's much more long term. And you have the ability to search past posts. As I said... they all have their place.
    /end another dissertation.

IMHO you need to lighten up... It's like Mike C. all over again...

That was the reason for me asking the question in the first place - I was just wondering if there were other means of communication that users of this forum were using. :D

I call out stupidity as I see it, plain and simple. Always have, always will. Nothing has changed since those days in that regard.

I posted an opinion. He didn't like it. Tough.

    Yup!

I don't think this is calling an \"idea\" stupid. I think your calling him stupid. Or at least that is how I read your post.

I don't understand your code, but it seems like your egging this on. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

I do find this a bit troubling since this behavior is being exhibited by the ex and current moderators of this forum. While I am sure this behavior would make Deglitch proud, I thought this was a place to share ideas and ask questions no matter how stupid they may sound or be.

Just because you think your better than others in this forum, you shouldn't belittle those who don't know as much as you. Or ask something \"you\" think is silly.

Way to set the example guys.

    IMHO

  • Actually it was generalized and untrue statements put out in a harsh way, from how I read it.

I'm still on IRC EFnet and l33t speek went out long ago; along with the mass of script kiddies as highspeed broadband renders most of the pinging & packeting useless.

If you don't want to join IRC by all means don't.

To say information doesn't get exchanged is BS also....I can send large files over high rate DCC far better than any email and I can send whole programs legal or not....if I so choose.

It depends on the users just like a forum

It is not that I didn't like your opinion, you just came across as crass. Looks to me like you are the one who didn't like what I had to say as a response – so you got mad and started using insults. And besides, you never answered the original question.

Uh, hello Mr. Pot? Kettle called. Know what he said?

Snide, passive agressive attempt to dismiss my opinion which triggered my subsequent response:

A sincere response would have omitted that entire phrase.

My reply should have been a sufficient indication that I was not aware of an IRC channel currently being used by the GNX community. \"I'll stick with community forums, thanks\" is pretty cut-and-dry, no?
I don't think this is calling an \"idea\" stupid. I think your calling him stupid. Or at least that is how I read your post.
I take it you've never heard the term \"K.I.S.S.\", \"keep it simple stupid\"? It's not \"calling\" anyone stupid, but rather describing a method of getting a point across or relaying information in a manner that is easily understood by the masses.

I don't call anyone stupid, but I will point out when I think people are exhibiting stupidity, just like I did with Mike C (may he rest in peace). He was far from stupid, but capable of monumentally stupid behavior at times. As we all are.
While I am sure this behavior would make Deglitch proud, I thought this was a place to share ideas and ask questions no matter how stupid they may sound or be.
Still sounds like you have a beef with \"the man\" like you've always had, even back over at the old forums KT. You could always stick with the \"tone farm\" forums. Plenty of \"deglitch free, uncensored, free flowing information\" over there, I'm sure.
Just because you think your better than others in this forum, you shouldn't belittle those who don't know as much as you. Or ask something \"you\" think is silly.
Same old chip on your shoulder from \"way back when\". Some things never change. No one is better than anyone else here KT.
To say information doesn't get exchanged is BS also.
Who said that? I sure didn't. Iliace? Did you say that? Nope, doesn't look like it to me.

I'm sure information does get exchanged, but from my experience with IRC the signal-to-noise ratio in that medium makes it hard to seperate the wheat from the chaff most of the time. Glad you find it useful. Some don't, including me, which I expressed and explained. Not my problem if people don't like it.

    /shrug

If someone wants to setup an IRC channel, go for it. Who am I to stop you? No one, that's who. Enjoy it. I sincerely hope it works out for ya and that you have fun. I simply said [paraphrased]:
I don't like IRC. Too much fluff, not enough substance for my liking. I'll stick with community style forums.
Granted in a much more verbose manner, but since when have I ever not done that? (eg: this post)

If you still disagree with my opinion, tough tooky, no cooky for you!
  • No one that has posted so far knows of any IRC channels for GNX units. Does anybody else? Please speak up, all hell is breaking loose on this thread.
  • I don't think this is calling an \"idea\" stupid. I think your calling him stupid. Or at least that is how I read your post.

Trust me, I spent many hours on the phone with Mike and know all too well how he could be. Capable of great things, and great friendship at times. Other times he would fly off of the handle an try and let everyone know how wrong they were and how much better he was.

Oh, and no. I had never heard that term KISS. As I said before, correct me if I was wrong. I still think it sounds a bit harsh even if it isn't ment to be.
While I am sure this behavior would make Deglitch proud, I thought this was a place to share ideas and ask questions no matter how stupid they may sound or be.

Ok, so I had a spelling error. Still getting use to the new laptop's keyboard.
As far as beef goes... why is calling what you see, acceptable for you but a beef for others?
Just because you think your better than others in this forum, you shouldn't belittle those who don't know as much as you. Or ask something \"you\" think is silly.

I dont see how standing up for what is right... a chip. I believe that no two people are the same, but regardless of their color, IQ, or language, should be treated with the same respect. I didn't see that in this thread.

GNX Jammer, I have always dug your work. And I repect the work you have put into this forum. And one of the things that makes this forum better than most is that the name slinging is pretty much kept to a minimum. A bunch of good guys who share knowlage and music.

I just felt you guys could of handled the situation better than you did, and called you on it.

    KT
  • Did some more research. It doesn't look like there is a readily-findable channel dedicated to GNX discussion. You can find some other ones, #AUDIOWORLD for example, that do have some relevant discussion. For the most part, however, you're better off looking for channels that discuss guitar gear or pro audio, and seeing if any folks there are GNX users.

    Good luck.
