Ibanez 8 String Guitar - RG2228

Hi guys,
I just noticed that Ibanez has brought out, would you believe it, an 8 STRING GUITAR. I assume it goes down to a G. This has aroused my attention for several reasons:
-It has EMGs
-It has 8 strings
-I wont need a bass player
-I want one

However, no one seems to care much about Australia, and we dont have these big annual musical equipment fairs (NAMM), thus I did not get my hands on one to see how they play (27\" scale).
Has anyone had any time with this new beast of an instrument?

  • I got an email update from Doug Doppler.
I don't think they have a confirmed date yet for a clinic coming to Australia. Maybe June, but looking more like August?
I'll keep my eye on this, and let you know.
Here is part of the email that might interest you.

CLINICS: I've started working as a clinician for Ibanez, whose amazing guitars I've been endorsing for the past decade. I happened to visit the Ibanez site the other day and had the pleasant surprise of seeing my mug on the top of the artists page promoting some upcoming clinics http://www.Ibanez.com/artists - please see the dates below, noting that I will be at Guitar Showcase in San Jose tomorrow night, Monday April 2. In addition to the below dates for Washington, Jemstock (yes Mr. Vai will be there), Italy, and New Zealand, there are others currently in the works (UK, Australia), so please keep an eye on my shows/clinics page at http://www.DougDoppler.com/shows.html
  • Wha? The 7 string models didn't catch on, so they think 8 will?

Don't get me wrong. I have two 7 stringers and I LOVE them, but let's face it...they're a dying breed it seems.

That said...I'd LOVE to give an 8 stringer a spin around the block. I'll keep my eyes open for one to show up around here.
  • I suppose its meant to appeal to people who play in severely low tunings, as the long scale really removes its \"shred\" potential.
But I was thinking of a 7 string! A RG1527 prestige... mmmmm. I dont think they are a dying breed. 8)
