  if you want to shred, you have to use a metronome and practice only at a level that you can cleanly execute before increasing the tempo.
  
  Practice different note values at each tempo as well. For instance try starting off with triplets at say, 80 bpm. (three notes per beat) Then move on to playing sixteenth notes at 80 bpm. (this will be four notes per beat)
  Then after a couple of minutes switch to sixteenth note triplets at 80 bpm(six notes per beat)
  Use strict alternate picking. Try randomly skipping strings. Play one, two, or three notes on the string you skipped to randomly. This will really reinforce your knowledge of the scale.
  Mix up playing diatonic and pentatonic for picking hand variety.
  
  Play along with other people, backing tracks to get a better feeling than playing alone.

  Transcribe some of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier for guitar, one part at a time, and learn them with a metronome. It will do wonders for you, both musically and technically, if you can commit to it.

  Some good advice so far. I know my scales, major and minor and know a fair bit of music theory,whilst playing through a GNX3000 which has a metronome but i usually use the drum patterns.
  I have Guitar Pro 4 so if theres any files for that you recommend, i'll see if i can get them.
