Variax Genx

I was just curious if any one has tried this combination. There are lots of offers for variax at blowout prices and I may just bite and try it out.

  • :D Hey \"the other mike B\"
I have used a yamaha version of the variax.. SLG series a steel string.
and it sounded great on direct with effects through a gnx3 ...also would do in a pinch with a patch for a crunchy rythm part too. wish I stil had it.
 I would love a variax for recording too  .
  • :D I am gonna get a Variax 300 steel this weekend I think GC has a bunch for 399. they sound pretty cool and seem a better fit for my lap than this c-57 Ovation I am useing.
  • yeah those Variax actually have some really nice sounds in them ... some of 'em look kinda cheap though, but i suppose the tone can make up for that! :)
  • yea Im lookin at the Acoustic 300 steel for recording. it looks petty comfortable. and this ovation keeps slipin all over the place. . It doesnt look as bad as the electric in that 300 class. Anybody got one.
  • Mine is on the way via ups. I will post a review when it arrives. I played one at Junky Music and it is at least a squire strat. Picked up the software packagr to. Seems a great match for genx.....
    We shall see

  • Are you getting the Acoustic or the electric the 300 series? and what did you pay? I see 599 everywhere for the Acoustic version. but GC will sell you a new one for 399 :? maybe a newer version is coming out they know about and there dumping the older one fast :? gonna wait till mondy to buy cause I wanna check out what else you can get for acoustics in a home studio enviorment for 400 bucks.

Hey Danny that was one of my uncertenties abot the Roud back Bowl shaped, heard lots of negatives about that takes some getting used to etc.. BUT newer ones like my LX have a roughed up spot that wont slip if you play sitting? I don't play sittind down I learned to play standing & am just more compfortable that way  Although the round back even standing takes some time to get used to as well. Everytime i play it I like it more & more It just plays & sounds awsome!! CHeck out my new post it's all 1778LX Rythem & Lead.

P.S. Have you ever seen that none slip stick on pad that you can buy for Ovations? There out there you just tell them what size Bowl you have & walah you get a non slip sit on your leg guitar for I think under $15 if i remember correctly?
  • I ordered the electric model. Havent had a chance to play the acoustic yet.

  • 8) Hey Partch. I really liked the tone on your new stuff. but I have a much less expensive model than yours and I hear a certain rattle or vibration in mine at times..nobody else hears`it but I do and it really bugs. . I have tried to get rid of it for about a year`and cant so I am trading up. I cant afford your model of ovation so I wil try to cheat and buy a variax or something else for around 400. theres gotta be somethin out there.
  • I havent played the variax acoustic. In your price range every seagullgulll guitar i have ever played were excellent, I have several old
Ibanezes that play and sound great. I moved on from the ovation for the same comfort reaason many moons ago although the legend recorded and played well.

Yea I really like the way the Ovation recorded and played also how it stayed in tune ...but that rattle just has to go before I lose my mind :x ... wait a min... Too late I lost that years ago   I wish I could have afforded the Balladeer. Those are Awsome. But alas I am just a poor musician with a budget home studio that requires so may things that my budget for each is limited. Keeps me researching all the best affordable models though. Might just have to tryout that Line 6 variax acoustic steel 300.
  • I took out a Variax 300 (electric) on try out, and It sounded way cool with the GnX3. The only things that buged me about it where 1)the fret wire on the 300 will need to be filed down on the bottom side of the neck (no biggie) 2) the bottom arce was cut too far forward to sit on my leg with any comfort in playing. I found myself shifting it back and forth from one leg to the other, which again is no big deal if you stand up to play, but myself, I sit in front of the computer most of the time I play.

I'm still very intrested in getting one, but probly a 400 instead. But on the other hand, I did see a (and I can't remember where) guy took the guts from one and made his own \"I'vebeenhad\" version of the Variax. Mirror finish, real top drawer job. 8)
  • :D Hey P.G. :!: I am so intrested in getting a black Variax now not the acoustic anymore. I have a Pod XT live that it will plug right into as well as a RP250. I like the POD for the online lessons and stuff but this little RP Kicks Booty with its models. I bet it would RAWK with a variax for studio stuff and just playin around wich is all I do these days

    A 400? I thought they just made 300s and 700s whats the difrence in a 300 or 400....its about 299 for a red 300 and about 1100 for a 700 I think.
  •   My mistake, I thought there was another model between the 300 & 700
  • The variax is in! The verdict is still out. I played quite a bit with the guitar into my fender reverb. I must say i was startled. I really wasnt expecting much. As for the guitar itself it is an entry/intermediate level guitar. Mine came with very acceptable action and finish. In terms of playability It is a lot like my old kalamazo solid body. The body itself is a trifle short and somewhat unbalanced. As mentioned before its not really great for settin and playing. As for the sounds. There are some great ones and quite a few mediocre or unusable. The 12 strings sound gues what FAKE!! It takes a bit of getting used to having decent sounds come out of a less than great ax. I found I had to consciously change my playing style from setting to setting. The acoustics are probably passable in some mixes but that will be another post when I try it with the Genx and recording. . Of course the twelve strings , banjo and resonators although interesting are a ways from the real thing. I do think you could use the resonators in a mix though. And the electric sitar...
I spent more than a few minutes with the animals... down in Monterey!

  • :D An old band mate of mine in the 80s and 90s plays with the Animals now on there tours. I just checked out some his live recordings ...he's such a monster player. there vocalist of course is a classic mouthpiece to say the least.
  • The animals are on my alltime top ten!
So you are one of the left behinds. Like me .
    As the classic song says
\" this one goes out to my left behind\"

  • 8) Oh yea Got a Black Variax comin my way. :!: GC actually did a fine job of searching through about 7 stores to find me a black one  . I think its supposed to be new there blowing them out for 149.00. heck for that price I'll bite. And just when I was given them a hard time for customer service they actually shine for once. 8)
I figure even if the models are close it will teach me alot about the diffrent tones one can achieve in the real world with the actual setups. since I cant afford to own them. Also with the workbench software I can be a virtual luthier. 8) . Should be able to plug it into my RP250 by this weekend. Also I found some info on moding them out there supposed to be cool electronics...so I'll let ya know how it turns out. I smell sawdust already
