  • Very nice Tal!! It's good to see a new post from you!! Have not seen you around as much these days? Hope all is well. Very smooth playing 8) So how is the L5 these days? Still blowing you away? I just got a new Acoustic for Christmas an Ovation 1778LX-HB man Tal it plays & sounds awsome IMOP 8) I posted an all Acoustic Song called Here I Am To Worship if you would like to hear it? Anyhow great post Tal!!
  • Yeah you really rule Tal, that was awesome! :D

I´m not that much into jazz, but i find really interesting the jazz improvisation, there are so much resources to develop a simple progression and melody that you can make a real masterpiece from it and that is very appealing to me.

I don't know if it would be too much to ask, but could you talk to us a bit more about this tune? i mean what scales, modes, arpeggios and chord substitutions you use over the basic progression of this standard.

I realize that my request might be overwhelming and i don´t want to look abusive, but you don´t have to be so detailed on your description and i'm sure that a most people like me here, would learn from it a lot and would appreciate it in a grateful manner.

    Cheers.
  • Super sweet, jazz is over my head but I just love the smoothness of your tone and playing. Grade A+ work!
  • Thanks, Tal Rules, glad to hear from you again. Happy New year to you and Mrs. Tal.

Well I did get the GNX-3, but I sold my strat, so I have been playing around on my daughter's left handed guitar, upside down. It's interesting, but different, I'm starting to \"find\" things this way, but a lot of times the fingers revert to right handed mode which makes for some odd unexpected notes.

Thanks again for sharing your songs with us.
  • Great job! I felt like I was at a jazz club. 8) I love how honest this piece is presented... Just you and your guitar, no effects. The notes in a pure form. Very classy.
  • Thank guys and I'm glad you enjoyed it..
I made my new years resolution this year to quit trying to compose and go back to the woodshed with the old jazz standards..

\"All of Me\" was originally composed in 1931.
So I guess that qualifies as an old jazz standard..

To Tavo especially since he asked...
I got the changes from the \"Real Book\"..It's been on the market for years. The link below is the newest incarnation.
    http://www.amazon.com/Real-Book-Sixth-Instruments/dp/0634060384/sr=8-1/qid=1168570954/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-8445855-0377629?ie=UTF8&s=books
There's over 500 jazz standards in the book..

If you're the impatient type Wikipedia has the changes and a short history of the tune listed here..
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Of_Me_(song)

Jazz tune format is like any other form..
You play the head.(Melody)...Jam a while and either end the tune or repeat the head..

If you look at the changes on the Wikipedia site you will notice that the tune is in the key of C..

Several ways this tune could have been improvised over.

You could have played Pentatonic Minor or Major pretty much all the way through..

You could have played a C dorian most of the way through. It might have sounded funny in a few places though..

You could have played an arpeggio over the chord being played in the rhythm. (If you play the arpeggio over the chord being played, it's impossible to play a sour note, since only the notes of the chord are being played..). You could have added as well the appropriate 7ths,9ths, 11ths, 13ths, as well in your arpeggio, to add more color..

You could have played Major scales over the major chords, minor scales over the minor chords, mixolydian scales over the dominant chords (You just flat the 7th of the major scale), Diminished scale runs and diminished arpeggios over the Dominant 7th chords..Augmented arpeggios work equally as well over dominant chords especially the 5 chord of the key you are playing in..(In this case the 5 chord would be G, since we're in the key of C..)..One could have added some nice harmonic minor work over the 5 chord as well....

I did a little bit of most of the above in the piece.. I try to follow the changes with the lead work, with scales and arpeggios in a nutshell, and try to revolve it around a tonal center...

If you're really interested in learning a little jazz. I highly reccommend this DVD..
Jimmy Bruno No Nonsense Jazz guitar..
    http://www.amazon.com/Jimmy-Bruno-Nonsense-Jazz-Guitar/dp/B000BM7YY2

Don't have to know how to read or even know anything much about what I'm talking about above. As Jimmy would probably say \"Nonsense\"..

DVD is aimed at the itermediate player and is 2 hours in length of seemingly endless information, that doesn't get too technical at all. And for $20 I guarantee, you wont go wrong..

    Hope the above helps...

And once again guys..Thanks for the kind comments.. On the road again next week so take care until I get back from cruising around the country side.. :) .

    See Ya,
    Tal.. 8)
  • Just closed my eyes and was instantly taken to a low ceiling, smoke filled little club. I am sipping on a gin and tonic. There is no one dancing because at this club everyone is so cool they just sit at their tables and groove. Thanks for the vacation! Be carefull on your road trip.
  • Thanks Tal,

It was nice of you to explain a bit of your work on this tune, i´m gonna try to analyze what you've done here, it's a lot of stuff to work with. I can't imagine how you jazzers manage to play changes every measure, thinking whats coming next and still develop a motif along the song, yeah i know it comes with practice but you definitely have to be a bit insane to do that.

    Thanks again man. :D
  • Hey Tal,

That was nice and relaxing with a nice feel to it.

That guitar does sound rather tasty.

It's good to see you back and posting again.
  • Tal:

I not only can't do jazz, I'm not sure I can even think it. But, I have a great appreciation for the music form, and those with the knowledge and skill to play it. If I were to rank your posts that I have had the pleasure hearing here, that certainly ranks as 1st or 2nd of my favorites. Great job Tal, look forward to hearing more of your outstanding work.
  • You hit another one out of the park Tal!!! Man, I must be maturing as a musician, because I've been Captain Distortion since day one, but that clean tone of yours is making me moist  . Great tone, great playing, great googly moogly 8)
  • Thanks guys....I'm happy you enjoyed it...
    Really appreciate your kind comments...
    Thanks...
    Tal.. 8)
