Oh no not that

If I play more than 30 minutes now my left thumb becomes quite painful and swollen. :( I've been playing guitar for about 35 years so I guess I'm going to have to make a trip to the doctor and have the thumb checked out. I have to take three ibuprofin tablets before playing at church now. I am not real happy with my thumb now because I'm getting my GNX-3 out of lay-away next week.

Any other \"oldtimers\" experience anything like this?

  • Sort of, but it's not usually painful and it's not attached to my hand.
  • does it have anything to do with throwing a football through a tire swing? he he he

Hey! I don't have that issue!!!
  • Yes.
I'll stick to just what hurts when I play guitar. No wait...I mean I'll stick to just my fret hand.

My index finger feels like it's splitting in two...especially during note bends. It hurts all the time. Sometimes almost to tears...and I have to stop playing for a few days or more.

Old injuries and old age. Bad combination. Sucks.

Tal had a video awhile back of some guy playing with two fingers. click here for Tal's Link
Inspiration like that helps. I hate the pain, but I love the guitar more.

I hope your's is fixable. Have you tried sticking your thumb in a <EDIT/ $50 FINE>? BOL
  • gee I didn't realize that i wasn't the only old dog in the kennel. After 40 plus years of useing every hand and power tool known to man i can only bar cord for a few songs, then I can pick notes for maybe an hour, then its time to edit recording and plink on the keys. GNX is new to me, Electric sounds are something I've just began to expore. Recording sound on sound has always been my desire, but not until the pc came along did i have this chance and am having an absolute blast. Really like the stutter effect and the wa wa. Its so much fun that I will play through the pain until me arms are like clubs and mi hands are nubs at the end of the clubs.

A few years ago the doc gave me free trials of viox, that really worked on my arthridas pain, unfortunitly damage was done to mi ticker and except it as if I were the guinny pig or research lab experimental mouse. wa.
    peace babys
  • I am doing some internet searches on organic non-medicinal arthritis treatments. I've heard about the Viox issues DenSco mentioned, which is why I am looking at organic material.

I'll let y'all know what I find out.

    Peace
  • There's a guy on the Google Jazz guitar thread, who had the same problem with his left thumb Mike..The Doc called it Trigger finger..He was told to let the hand rest, so he's quit playing for a few months..Goes by the handle \"Oyasco\".. I think he's a member of this forum as well but hasn't posted in a while..

    As for me..
I've got 2 crushed fingertips in my right hand. (My middle and my ring). Makes finger-pickn' awkward at times. Have to keep the nails short, becuase they grow out so weird they tend to hang up on the strings if left long. Loose tone, because I have no nails. Just the fleshy part of what's left of the fingertips..

My left hand has the top knuckle on the middle finger of the left hand, very painful to move..(Happened in an old Bowling injury)...I compensate for it by not bending the middle finger sideways..

Left wrist was shattered in 7 places as well. Still gives me twinges..I used to be able to play strictly bar chords all night, but the injuries to my left hand make me get away from that. I'm practicing alternate voiceings, and chord inversions, where the bar is no longer needed. ...It's made me a better player and made the fret board a lot more interesting to look at..

Hope everything turns out well for you Mike...
  • hey guys,
sorry to hear about your injuries. you might want to try some glc, omega 3,6,9 pills or some fish oil pills. all of them are supposed to be good for arthritis and/or joint lubrication. i heard about the glc from my judo/jujitsu sensei and black belt mag. advertises glc 2000. my fiance has some pretty bad back issues from previous injuries and surgeries and the omegas have helped her alot. when i was going to school for classical guitar, i had some issues with tendonitis and carpel tunnel and i had to really watch my left hand technique. to this day i still play with too much tension in my left hand. you really have to be careful about that kind of stuff and just trying to \"suck it up and play through the pain\" is really not a good idea. when it hurts you have to stop and rest and another really good idea is to stretch before any playing/practicing session.

good luck and please be really careful...

why was my last post edited - pills, not laxatives.
  • Awwww man...me too :? I know I'm getting older but earlier this month when I played my pointing finger on my fret hand would start to hurt through my wrist. :( I layed off the gitfiddle for a week and made myself busy with setting up my new rack system (it really sucked not bieng able to play) but thats what helped. so lay off the guitar for at least a week or 2. Also all that one handed web surfing youve beeen doing can't help.   now I'm much better this month but now I take time to warm up my hand slowly...oh... so... sloooowly  :lol::wink::lol:
  • Mike ,

I had a lot of sucess with hand pain several years back with large doses of vitamin c. I did organicly eating 1 green pepper daily for about 2 weeks. Someone told me that it had to be through green peppers because the ascorbic acid in citrus cancelled the healing properties. Worked for me. Faith is a strange bird but fly with what works for you.

    Keep X in Xmas,
    The Real Mike B
  • I'm young compared to many folks here. My thumb aches after a few power-chord-based songs on a small-radius neck. On flatter necks, it's not a problem.

It does go away each and every time shortly after I stop playing, for which I'm thankful.
  • nicewrk, me like green peppers! Am I real or figment of my imagination.

ODB, all that web surfing is done with my right hand, go figure. :)
