Pickin' your Guitar

(if you own more than one guitar)
Do you have a guitar you play more than your others?
Is it your cheapest?

My cheapest is my Jackson DK2. I bought it for taking with me OTR Truckin'. I named the axe Bigrigger. (I name all my guitars)

I try to play my more expensive guitars while at home. But I keep picking my Bigrigger to play...and I think it's because I'm trying to \"save\" my more expensive guitars. I'm trying to stop that.

I'm really guitar'd out. I can't feel good about owning a guitar I don't play. My more expensive guitars are nicer to play.

How do you choose? What is your Main Axe?

  • I think I'm up to eight guitars now. They go through a rotation. Since I'm lazy and generally don't want to go through the whole routine of plugging in and turning things on and off, I generally grab my acoustics most of the time. All my guitars are different, so a lot of which one I grab also depends on the needs of the song or my mood.
Right now, I truly believe that I will be buried with my American Deluxe V-neck strat and my Taylor acoustic.

I hear you AC!! I can't wait to get the cash flow together to pick that Ovation up 8) Then I would not have to plug in get setup etc..
But right now All I play is my JS1000. My RG470 just sit's in it's gig bag in the closet. I have not played it since I've got the JS :D
  • Manitou, I just about bought that very same guitar, but it had a reverse headstock. Loved the paint job, and most importantly, that Jackson neck.
As for with one I reach for most often, my cheapo DK1 Jackson or the Krammer Farrington. My Charvel if I'm in a C-C mood
  • Great question!! I play my Ibanez S540 almost exclusively. I've neglected my Strat since I bought the Ibanez 7 years ago. I have a guitar magician (luthier) who unfotunately lives 450 miles away. I'm going up there for the holiday (first time in 3 years), and taking my Strat so he can get it back in top condition. Obviously, I adore my Ibanez, but I'd like to get the Strat back up to speed for that nice neck pup blues tone.

    BTW, Bigrigger looks sweet 8)

It's an awesome neck!! That is what sold me on this guitar. I like 25.5 scale and double octave necks with jumbo frets. I'm using light gauge strings...and I think I need to add a couple more springs to the bridge ( 3 to 5 )...then it should be most puss.

I made my decision on the neck alone, while staying under a certain price. I really wasn't \"into\" the eerie dess finish, but it quickly grew on me. Now I love it...and would never part with this guitar.

The one guitar I like the most...Ibanez JS 1000...I play the least. I still think there is something wrong about that. :?

Dear God...please give me a red Ibanez S540 with the maple neck and fretboard.
Bow Wow grrrr woof wimper Wuf slobber slurp.
    ( Canine translation; \"Dear God please give me a big bone\" )
  • Hey, it just so happens that mine is RED :lol: ... but you can't have it :P . I was out looking around with my brother killing time before I had to go to the airport, with no intention of buying a guitar that day (I swear!!!!) and played this one. I knew I couldn't live without it. I had to have them ship it to me.

PS, that canine translation... you sure that was the dog praying?

    Great minds think alike.
:P But I'm stepping lightly. AC is Treasurer now...(in Shredd's absence) and I know he'll work out some deal with ilace...
I usually do subtle violations...but ilace always catches them. Stuff like saying dayum. It gets by the dayum filter. I still pay dayum fines for each dayum I say. Dayum. :P
awww dayum it..now I can't quit. This dayum post is really costing me.
  • As acting Treasurer, I'd like to say \"Where's the cash, deadbeats?\" Don't make me call Limpy Joe and Vinny Boom Boom.
  • In order of current playing preference:

    Brian Moore Custom Shop
    Godin LGX-SA
    Clapton Strat
    70's jap strat
    home built strats

My acoustics get rotated for playing weekly:

    Martin DC1E
    Taylor 714
    Martin Alternative X midi

My Ovation is my travel out of town guitar.

    These get less play:

    Les Paul Studio
    Gibson Blueshawk
    Strat 12 string
    Martin D 1-12 string
    Rogue sitar
    scalloped neck frankenstrat

My 1917 Martin gets very little play. It spends most of its time in the casem and just comes out to show folks what a really old Martin looks and sounds like. The action is high, so it just doesn't play as well.
  • I just pick one and roll with it. Usually the one nearby, unless I'm in a particular mood.

I had the money, but was told I'm \"too bukoo\"
  • I have 7 guitars, and the one I play most is the cheapest. It's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (with all Gibson hardware) that I have on a stand right next to my desk. I really don't care if it gets any dents, etc., so it stays out constantly. My others are either in their protective cases nearby, with the exception of my strat and ovation that are hanging on the wall.
  • :D I have a 50 dollar Tele I play alot but the other day I took out my SG standard and it was sooo nice i havent put it back up since. I really forgot how much it Kickes butt so i am not putting it away for so long again.
  • As far as \"cheap\" guitars, where money is concerned... all my guitars are cheap as far as guitars go. A person like myself should not own a 5,000 USD instrument, because if I did, it would be scratched up, dented, and otherwise soiled and desecrated many times over.
  • I agree with you iliace. Not that it wouldn't be nice to afford expensive guitars, but I find I have too much reluctance to want to \"play the frets off.\"

I feel more comfortable playing a guitar I don't have to fear knicking after I attempt a Van Halen leap, and crash into all the furniture and lamps....beer bottles and ash trays....the dumb bell set...and my Chevy carberator.

I really admire beautiful guitars...but if I worry so much about every tiny smudge...I don't \"enjoy\" them.
Then again...I admire these guitarists who own \"expensive\" guitars with buckle rash, finish worn off in places your wonder ... :? How?....cig burns by the first tuner...and they play them like God meant them to be played....not fretted over...but fretted to death.

I guess I would have a hard time respecting a great guitarist who fussed over his guitar...especially when he can afford to smash it at the end of a blazing rendition of glory. (of course that requires at a minimum...an audiance...or atleast an empty fifth.)

So...I think it comes down more to style. You would cringe if a Jazz guitarist smashed his flawless Birdland....yet...a few of us would stand in our monkey suits and yell YEAH...throwing horns in the air...maybe a lit Bic lighter....and look around wondering ...\"what's wrong with these people?\"
  • I used to have that attitude, but then I figured that I paid a lot of money for the guitar so I'm gonna get my money's-worth out of it. I've been much happier ever since.
  • I don't really have to say how I feel about this topic do I???
