  • I Have the Jem and can say without equivocation that it is a fantastic instrument to play and to hear.
Although given the hefty price tag I would suggest you shut your eyes and play any prestige RG model and you will notice there is little difference. Hear is a quote direct from the mouth of Ibanez with respect to the Jem.

    \"Hi Gary,

Haha, good question - if you just look at the specs on paper it is quite difficult to see where that extra £1200 comes from! What the specs don't tell you though are the subtle differences that make it what it is.
With regards to the RG1550, if Ibanez can't make a decent guitar for £600 then there's something wrong somewhere, and RG1550 is definitely a decent guitar. But with that in mind, how can people like ourselves and increasingly the boutique companies like PRS, Tom Anderson, etc. charge up to £4000 in some cases for a guitar that does almost exactly the same as your £600 one?
The differences are almost exclusively the quality of workmanship (the time and attention to detail spent getting it built to the highest possible standard) and the quality of the woods used for the body, neck and fingerboard. On the JEM7V-WH there are other little things like the special finish to the body which means that it won't go yellow with time, the Monkey Grip and Lion's Claw cutouts which obviously add a lot to the production cost, and not to mention the small royalty that goes out to Steve Vai from each one sold.
You're right though - it is hard to see exactly where the extra money has gone on paper, but believe me it's all justifed from point of manufacture right through to point of sale.

I hope that this helps to put your mind at rest!\"

  • Music Man Petrucci. I hope to ge one in the new year. I just tried out the Steve Morse model last Friday. Very nice as well.
  • Can't speak to any of those on the list you have BUT: I have a JS1000BP which is Awsome!! Much Cheaper than the Jem & very fast & Sreddable guitar 8)

    God Bless!!

I heartily agree as I have had the black pearl, but now play the JS1200CA.
Only one slight drawback against the Jem the lack of frets 23 and 24.

    Cheers

  • I've tried the Jem and the Petrucci and prefer the Petrucci. I own the 7 string version. The Petrucci neck (6-string) feels similar to Ibanez necks so it comes down to tone and features. The Petrucci's piezo sounds great. EB makes some really solid instruments.
The trem has a very nice feel and is adjustable all-around. It's nice to not have to deal with a locking nut. They're a p.i.t.a, but I'm lazy.
Good luck! You can't lose with any of your choices. 8)

you actually got a response from ibanez? that must be a first. do you mind if i ask for the email address you used?
  • I take a JEM if it came with garym30's avatar girl :D:wink:
  • Go for the Petrucci, if you really want a genuine shredder model. It feels great, plays great, sound wonderful, and very versatile - just ask AC 8) The other two are awesome guitars, don't get me wrong - but the Petrucci would be my choice if all other factors are equal. Part of this decision would be whether you want single-coil pickups; I don't believe the Petrucci has them.

Though if I really had to pick an artist model, I'd get the Carvin that Tony Macalpine uses... I really should do that soon!
  • The Petrucci doesn't have single coils, but the middle position splits the pickups to the inner coils giving somewhat of a strat tone.
  • Go with an Ibanez RG Prestige with the piezo bridge and replace the pups with Evoltion ..........save money and get everything in one ball of wax 8)

Plus you won't have that \"monkey bar.\" JMO, but that thing is goofy. Ibanez makes some pretty kick ass guitars but they're like the Honda of the guitar world. Just about everyone has one.
  • Hey Smegolas, all three of those guitars are really nice though I haven't tried the Petrucci model as yet. However, before you choose, have you considered an ESP?? I was going to buy an Ibanez Prestige this year until I tried an ESP Horizon NTII. I instantly fell in love with it - slick neck, superb finish with the quilt maple top, you can split the pickups so its versatile live, excellent case etc. Even the LTD's are good for the money especially with their finish.

I never ever thought I'd buy one but seriously, I've hardly touched my other guitars since I bought my Horizon this year. Admittedly I'm not real big on signature guitars as I don't think they're any different to any other guitar - I go for tone not names!! Oh hang on...I do have a Wolfgang...oops  Ok then, so I don't 'usually' go for signature models :?
Don't get me wrong, those three on ya list are nice though.

ive got 2 electrics now, ans they are both ibanez. ones an rgt320q prestige, which is an absolutely gorgeous guitar. so based on that, im leaning towards one of the music mans. i love morse's tone more than anyones, and the new y2d is possibly the nicest looking guitar ive ever seen (only seen it in pictures though). has anyone tried one?

now if i could only get it with the tree of life neck...

Hi I did have difficulty, but eventually sent one to a UK office and this is the address I got the reply from.

    Hope it helps.

    Here's a Chinese \"JEM\" for USD 99

If a USD 99 guitar can have them, I dont feel that monkey grip and lion's claw add too much in production costs. Its all just part of one routing step.

That royalty thing could be the big one. I for one have stopped buying products that have an artists name or famous brand on them as they cost twice or even three times as much as without that name.

    Go with the Petrucci then.....
  • If you like them all, the Morse is far and away the better bargain. It can be had for about $1250, vs. $1700 for the Petrucci and $2000 for the Jem.

I've always liked the look of the Jem, but I'm sticking with my Brian Moore. (and my strats)
  • Keep in mind that you can get great deals on the used market. My Petrucci 7 decked out with all the bells and whistles was about a grand. If I want to sell it, I believe I can get more for it.
  • Are you trying to?

No man. I'm gonna go for that Carvin instead.

But I thought I'd ask anyway.

I know your tactic... You're trying to get me to go lower, aren't you? Admit it. :P

I don't know... you're about to leave your job and move to where women aren't fairy tales. The deadbeat factor is very high.
