Unreal Acoustic Guitar Technique

Hi guys,

Apologies in advance if this has been posted, but in any case, for those who haven't seen this, it is a MUST SEE.
This is a Canadian guitarist based out of Montreal. Totally unique style, and awesome music.
Enjoy! :)

  • Thanks for posting that! :) It's always interesting to see the many ways people can play the guitar. Good stuff.
  • Abso - freekin' - lutely INSANE. I'll bet no one else in the world can do that. I remember when Stanley Jordan's technique was so fascinating to everyone (it really is pretty awesome) but I never really dug the music it made. This kid not only came up with something amazing, but the sounds are incredible. I'm gonna have to look this guy up. WOW.
  • OMG - I don't know whether that just makes me wanna quit or lock myself in the basement with my guitar 'til one of us (me or the guitar) wins, but dammit, I just feel inferior watching that!
  • To do that he must have super light gauge strings.
It shouldnt make you want to quit, it should inspire you.
Really the mechanics involved are not that complex, the practise required to bring it up to that level is what is amazing.
  • Yea the guy's unbelievable..
I still cant figure the ease with which he is able to get those harmonics?
Perhaps the light strings as thehootman mentioned...
He's very active in his forum as well, so those interested should check it out on his official website.
  • Ooph, thats some crazy guitarplaying man. Very talentes guy. Let´s make a topic on crazy guitar skillz.

    Greetingzzz!!!
  • He's the acoustic Stanley Jordan.
  • I've seen that clip before :D Talk about Harmonics 8)

    God Bless!!
    Partch
  • Glad I watched. Nice blend of harmonies and melody. Neat the way he tapped the harmonics while sliding around.
  • Notice that the acoustic is plugged in....allows a compressor to be attached which would raise the volume of otherwise quiet harmonics...
  • wicked 8) , just wicked. Who is gonna be the first one to give this a try  I'm on it ....... I wish
  • What is his name? Web site?
  • i used to play Open Mics in college and there was a guy who played this way. he used the body of the guitar more, but still the same basic style. the key is finding the harmonics and develping strong fingers. i played drums before i switched to guitar, so this style really came naturally to me. when i play i usually just hit at the 7th and 12th frets along all the strings with length of my pinky. once you get better, you can start finding individual string harmonics at different places on the fretboard. once you get the style down, the most difficult thing is capturing that sound via pickups. its very dynamic with unplucked strings resonating with body hits. the guy i played with used a humbucker in the soundhole, an internal mic to capture the body hits and a piezo to capture the string hits. then he used a off-board blender along with some heavy compression. when i started playing this style live, i ran my piezo into the soundboard, used an SM57 over the strings, and had the soundman do the mixing. i couldnt get as intricate as this guy, but the piezo/57 combination has worked well. i have also noticed that some acoustics just can't do this. i guess some just dont resonate at the right frequencies to make the harmonics come through. its a fun style to play for sure and definitely one of those audience-catchers that can really quiet down an unruly crowd and get their undivided attention for a few minutes.
