Do bass guitars have lower output than standard guitars?

I just got back from a Music Go Round, where I picked up my first bass. The bass sounded fantastic at the store through a bass amp, but when I brought it home and plugged it in, I had to crank everything all the way up to even begin hearing anything. Is this normal? I messed around with the volume knobs--that's not the issue.

I have a GNX3000, which has several bass amps and cabs. It is hooked up to a mixer that goes to a set of monitors. Guitar = great. Bass = what'd you say?

  • I should feel that bass guitars output more voltage from their pickups due to fatter strings and more place for coils

On top of that, many basses have active electronics.

However the big thing is that the Human ear cannot hear bass frequencies very well. It needs to be boosted maybe 4-8 times more than rythm to be heard equally loud. This is the limiting factor that makes bass appear weak.

I use a boosting limiter in front of the GNX3K when connected to a Bass Guitar.

An alternate way of boosting signals would be to turn up the hardware volume control at the back of the GNX3K when you connect your bass.
