Keeping it Clean (By Tal)

Well...
Broke my trusty ES175 out for this one. 12 guage flat wound strings and all :lol::lol: .
Man....
I don't know why..I just love the sound of a big old fat jazz box cranking away. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

The tune is only 2 guitars and a midi drum. I have been recently working on keeping a walking bass line going while playing the chords at the same time. That's what you're hearing in the rhythm section. Patch used in the rhythm part was the CLEAN late nite patch..

The lead part is my trusty ES 175 on the CLEAN Pat Jazz Patch with reverb thrown in.

Both patches pretty much simulate my REAL amps (Roland JC120 and my JC60) pretty damn close..

I really dig the walking bass/Chord stuff and I will probably incorporate some more of this stuff in my future compositions.

Hope you guys dig the tune...

  • Man Tal you're one cool cat! Some really nice stuff there. My brother's got an old ES175 and it sounds pretty close to that.
  • 8) Jazz usally ain't my thing, but that was pretty cool. I'm just too young to wrap my head around the phrasing and chord strutures of jazz, But still very cool Tal. Nice mix aswell. 8)
  • Thanks for the comments.. 8)
    Made my month.. :D .

I wrote this tune backwards from the way I write most of my stuff.
I wrote out the chord changes first, while playing with the walking bass, while chord comping at the same time. Then I wrote out the melody.

Inspiration for the walking bass/chord comping came from this fabulous instruction vid from jazz guitarisist \"Kevin Van Sant\"
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=grK43Poye1U

Really a pretty cool technique. If you get the time, watch the vid. The guys an excellent instructor and player. 8)

The melody line is pretty short on this one. (About 12 seconds. )
The melody starts at the 00:34 to about 00:46 and is repeated at various intervals through out the piece. The rest is pretty much a jam. 8)

Worked on the chord progressions a couple weeks, and the melody about 2 days. This piece, I just wanted to jam to mostly, after the chords were written down. Maybe a few rough spots in the lead work, but I didn't want the lead work to sound canned. I wanted that jamming feel to the piece. :)

Thanks once again for taking a listen and you wonderful comments... 8)

    See Ya,
    Tal. 8)

  • I love the tone of that guitar. Very mellow but still bright in the upper register yet still maintaining a certain mellowness about it. I like that we have varied syles of players on this forum. Thats what makes it fun.

I dig the Mr. Clean avatar..I think Tal Farlow would approve as well, in this world of wailing, overdriven guitars..

    Jazz and blues aint dead...
    They just smell funny.. :lol::lol::lol:
  • Hey Tal! Excellent chord progressions and great tone. You mentioned you did this one backwards by writing out the chord structure first…by the sound of those chord changes that would take me a lifetime…when I try to understand music at this level my brain shuts down because it hurts to much…Great sound. :):)
  • <div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>Hey Tal

Sorry I did not get to reply to this post sooner. Life for me has been a bit crazy lately.

I love the sound of the guitar! I think my head would explode if I tried to play something like that. I have a hard time chewing gum and playing at the same time.

Great job as usual! Man you can play.

  •  Wow :!:

Hey Tal can you tell me what is the difference between the L5 and a Byrdland model?
  • Yo 'tal - really tasty lix. Great sound too, but I just love the sweet runs and licks going on. Sounds great, and probably fun to play too...
  • Sorry it's taken a little time to get back on some of these threads. Just a few nagging health problems but all is well now.. 8)

    Mike....
A Byrdland is a thin bodied carved archtop with shorter scale length than an L5

  • Hi Tal. Thanks for checkin in on my track. I listened to your 'keeping it clean' and thought, \"man i should pull my track down !\" They are some sweet tones there bro !
Not sure what media player everyone is using to play this track, but i clicked on your file and the windows media player 11 opened it and the visualization was very uhmmm TRIPPIN !! 8)
Was that Acid Jazz ???
    Great stuff Tal.
  • Tal, another masterful rendition on your ES-175. The chord structure and walking bass lines are excellent. The lead is also outstanding, even though sometimes I didn't know where is was going....You seem to have this rare ability to bring together tonally dissonant riffs, and make them cohesive. Great job Tal.
  • Thanks Blackstrat & BG..
    Made my day...
