Center of the Universe

Hi guys, it's been a while.
This is still not finished, I need to re-record the guitars and add vocals (yay!). Add a few keyboard strokes etc...still it is 95% complete.

....then comes my big challenge: mixing I'd appreciate your comments, if you could please tell me which sounds are spoiling the song...so that I can mix accordingly. You have no idea how important this is to me, because I simply don't have the mixing skills :))

  • Mr. Glider007! That was totally kickin!! Very well written, interesting, great tones, and nice drumming as well 8) 8) 8) . As far as mix, I think it already sounds pretty good. For my taste, I would either bring the kick up a little, or use eq to boost the higher frequencies on it. On my speakers, the kick gets a little buried, but other than that - you the man!!!
  • Oh man, that's a phenominal song! 8) Cool arrangement and a kick ass performance. I can't wait to hear the finished version. :D
The mix does need some work though.

The kick drums are lost in the mix due a lack of volume, and they also need to be separated from the bass guitar freqs. That's a typical problem. You can filter some bass freqs just a touch from the kick drums to give the bass it's own space. This is something that panning can't eliminate all the way. If you have two instruments occupying the same freqs, the louder one will win and be heard while the quieter one is lost.
The general mix can use a little treble boost for clarity. If you have BBE Sonic Maximizer, it can be done in one step. Man I love that software.
The bass guitar needs to have some of the boomier bass freqs filtered out, believe it or not. Sometimes it gets muddy, then has spots of clarity. Some compression could be used too to help keep the volume from spiking up in certain spots, unless you were going for that effect.
You asked for the critiques, so I hope this helps you out.

That's really a cool tune! Are you going to upload the final? :D
  • Go Glider.
    Liked this post alot.
    Do more.
  • Cool!
I thought it was the Ozzy song when I read the title but this was way better than that.
Really cool man, I liked it alot.
  • That is very cool.

    Very Iron Maiden
  • Excellent  :!: Very Kool tune.
  • This is really a great tune…Double leads are excellent…strings added a nice touch…love all the changes, it keeps the whole tune evolving…only suggestions I have with the mix is pretty much what ACWILD had mentioned…I would also raise the volume on the slow strings unless you plan on more lead during that section…I think the placement of all the instruments sound good…Can’t wait to hear your final version. :):)

I really didn't expect to see any replies soon! Many thanks to you all.

My computer crashed last night after I uploaded the file. It just wouldn't turn on now....but I hope my hard drives can be salvaged, along with this song. I am going to cross my fingers

The basses! Terrible...It looks like not only do I need a new PC- I need new set of speakers as well. I listened to this at my friends car and my ears were in pain even lowering the bass down to minus 5 (which was pretty much the lowest ). I will definitely lower the volume and the EQ settings on the bass guitar , it's way to boomy.Boosting high frequencies of the kicks is also on my list. Thanks AC, insideout and kirk ! I hope that after I lower the basses the fast and slow strings will be more clear. Thanks again to all for listening.

..after I figure out this annoying PC problem I'll get right back to work
  • Glider,
I liked it!! cool song!! You say there will be Lyrics added?? I be looking for the finished product!! I agree sounds like Iron Maidon ish if I remember correctly?? Been along time since I've heard there stuff.

    God Bless!!
    Partch
  • Good luck with your hard drive. I've lost two in the last two years along with the original songs and photos that weren't backed up.
This is really a great tune! :D I'm looking forward to hearing the remaster. 8)
  • Its nice to hear a Kamelot cover. I wish we heard more them in the US, but they can't seem to get radio play here.
  • They were in Springfield Virginia last week and touring U.S now.
Most of the bands I like don't get radio time in the US....most are from Europe. If you like to hear them on radio you should definitely try epicrockradio.com
thanks for listening! check back for vocals!
