Be Thou My Vision

Hey All,
It's me again. I was able to work a litle on something heavier for my mate Wickerman. He has been asking for me to try something Heavy Metalish. So here is what I came up with, Transforming this Awsome Traditional Irish Hyme. Hope you enjoy!!

  • The heaveir edge puts more life into it.
    I dig the crunch!!!
  • I love the hymns---so much there

good job on that. your vocals up on this one --good job
nice rythum section. Are you gonna do this one in church? Your really staying active in this stuff good job parch--God bless ya :)
  • Groovy Tray, Thanks & I agree sometimes just adding some distortion, and faster tempos realy do give these older Hymes life & make them fresh for younger generations that listen to rock, metal style music.

Wogs, We do this one at Church. We do it more with a swing feel to it. I use more of a good overdriven tone mostely at Church. This song is cool how we do it it Church!! It is definetly one of my favorite Hymes we do in Worship Service!! I tried to get a Heavy Metal feel to this one for Wickerman.

    God Bless You!!
    & Thanks for listening!!

  • Your recording skills are getting better. It shows with this post. You have steam now, just keep going. Good job.
  • Nice tune 8)

I like the Celtic lead melody played throughout.

Do you know what scale is used?
  • Thanks Slash!!
Yes I used Eb Major. E Scale Form starting 2nd finger 11th fret. I hope that makes sense?? I mainly played the higher octave notes of that Scale form starting on the A string to high E.

    God Bless!!

  • Dude, I love the Scottish feel of this tune! Makes it really stand out. 8)
As far as the mix goes, it sounds like everything is coming out the center. A little panning to give the instruments their own space would bring out some clarity. Adding some treble to the vocals will help separate them from the other instruments so that you can bring down the volume a bit too.
That's just being nitpicky though. I really enjoyed the listen. :D
  • Ac,
Thanks!! I appreciate your feedback!! Question how is the best way for me to EQ my vocals to add highs?? I've thought that myself. I would like more highs in my vocals. I use GNX4 with a Vocal patch V Vintage & I often feel that there just kind of muffled. It's not like the GNX4 has an EQ?? That part is all set direct for the vocal patch. I think I seen an EQ function in Pro Tracks effects menu?? Would I eq that track after I sang & recorded?? Most probably have mixers & stuff that they can EQ there vocals & stuff?? Anyhow any pointers would be great!!

    Thanks again!!

I suggest that you record vocals direct, without a patch. Anything you record is permanent, so you want it as virgin as possible.
If you right-click in the track control panel, you should see an eq there. Just boosting some of the higher frequencies should help with some clarity. Not too much though, it's like girls who first dabble with perfume... The pour it on instead of using just the right amount.
General eq'ing that I do, (and I have to thank Mark007 for taking the time to teach me), goes like this...
Guitars, pull out some bass in the eq to give the bass guitar it's own space. It'll sound weird at first alone, but when you listen to the mix as a whole, it'll make sense.
The kick drum and the bass will also fight for air time, so pull back a little bass on the kick drum. Otherwise, they'll smother each other out. Volume wins out on those battles, which is not a good thing.
Vocals could use a touch of treble.
In addition to eq'ing to give each track it's own space, panning will give you that finishing touch.
Vocals and lead guitar down the center.
Guitars maybe about 20 percent left or right.
Bass in the center or in the opposite direction of the guitars.
Drums from software are usually panned already, but if they aren't where you want them, you can run a CAL program.

Yikes, I typed a lot!

No problem. I'm still learning a lot, but these guys have helped me out a bunch. Mark007, MikEdge, Guitar3456... All were very generous with their time and patient with their teaching. You've got lots of talent and it'll be great to hear you do your tunes justice! 8)
  • Hey there Partch!! I agree with the above! Very nice work my friend. Keep it up!

  • Hey Buddy,

Sorry i am replying so late to your awesome song, but you know ive been having problems with the internet :( Thanks for doing it specially for me :D:wink:

Unfortunately the song keeps buffering when it gets a few seconds in which is really annoying as it sounds so freakin good with the lead and distorted guitar in there.Ill keep trying but im sure it is this crappy dial up connection i am using :(
  • Hey Wicker,
Thanks man!! I appreciate that comming from such a good Metal player like you!! It's not that I don't like metal I just realy don't play that style currently. I did my best to try & give it a metal feel!! Anyhow wicker you might just want to right click the link & save it to your computer and let the slow download happen & when it's done on your computer listen then. there is no way you can stream audio or video with Dial UP. when am I going to hear some new from you?? I have been trying to post a new tune. Original #2. I have been working with a drum program called Jamstix. Have you ever heard of this?? If so what do you think of it??

    God Bless You wicker!!

  • Ok ill try saving it to my PC then.

Not long now until u can hear our original song just that my mate doesnt have a clue how to use the software ,hes one of those people that install it straight away and doesnt look at the instructions.I could probably do it but i would need to sit down for a good half hour with the instructions in fron of me but i dont have the time at his house, most of the time we wanna spend playing. So hes gonna get his dads mate who is a Pc Expert to help.

It will be worth the wait(i hope  )

Cant wait to hear ur new tune.I havent used jamstix, only used pc drummer, is it easy to use?

    Rite ill download ur song......

    See ya
  • Nope, wont do it when i save target as.

I really wanna hear ur song, i hope i don't have to wait till i get broadband back (oct 17).I guess its going to be quite a long wait, ill keep trying tho.
  • Cool stuff!
I agree about the mix though, it would sound much better with a little EQ and panning.
But that's nothing away from the song of course, keep on rockin'!
  • Nice tune partch, other than panning and EQ which was covered, I also thought adding a part where the guitar does some fine Scottish tune solo, perhaps double guitars , to give the vocals a breather .
  • Excellent your recording skills are getting much better with every new tune . I like the classics the changes in this tune are nice and heavy

P.s. Sorry I took so long to jam this one, it escaped me somehow :?
  • :o that was cool Partch.

U shud do tht in church.

When you do another heavy song try and put some palm muting, pinch harmonics, harmonys to make it even more \\m/metal\\m/.

    Mix was brilliant to.
