Jamstix

Hey All,
Just wondering? Is there any Jamstix users in the house?? If so what do you think of this program? Is it truly as good and easy as advertized?? I'm playing around with the demo of this program right now. It took me about 3 hours to get everything installed, interfacing properly but I did have it working in Free Jam Mode. Must say that was pretty darn cool!! 8 minuets went by pretty quick & it was fun!! At that point I was glad to just have it working!! Anyhow I'm considering this program for for fast and easy and believable drum solutions. Any comments feedback would be much appreciated!!

God Bless!!
Thanks in advance!!

  • Hey, I was looking at those! When you get a chance, can you give me a review? :D

  • Another alternative is Fruity Loops. The bottom of the line version is like $140 or so, but gives you so much more than just drums. And gives you the ability to randomize any instrument, including the drums. At the moment I'm using it to record my guitar playing into and mixing it up with a drum loop track that I wrote. I go from my amp to my sound card mic input. I can also add various other instruments like bass, strings, horns, whatever. I can write the music myself or have it randomized. Great for getting past a writing (music) block. I have to say for the price it has great sound quality.

  • partch, you got the demo to work  I tried for a long time to get it working with NO succes. That was some time ago now. Maybe I'll head over to RAYZOON and DL the demo again .

Is there sample drums that come with the program or did you have to load in samples from some place else, eg DFH?

As for my opion of jamstix without using it, I think it's a killer idea. I would love to get it working and give it a shot.

I think part of my rut is because of my stale old drum rhythm's, and I'm no good at programming drums on a drum machine, or step writing on the keyboard.

Hey courtney2018 welcome to the forum.
  • Courtney-Thanks but no thanks. I've tried fruity loops demo & was not impressed at all!! For one most of what I heard was kind of hip hop sounds I'm sure there is more But: it offers so much more than I want or need. I basically just want VST type drums to interface & use with Pro Tracks Software that came with my GNX4.

P.G.-I must say it was very difficult to get it working!! But like there moto says \"just Play with it\" It is certainly condusive to play with!! Pretty functionall, logical, seems easy to tweak etc.. Do you have a VST Wrapper?? I don't know what hosting Software your using?? You may have that provided with your software?? Pro Tracks Plus does not. You must purchase VST Adapter Program which I must say is worth having just so you can use free VST Plugins, or purchase one later to enhance your setup. It was 60 bucks. But Jamstix will not work with PTP without this Adapter. Let me know PG if I can help you get set up?? I will. I had it working in free Jam Last night with hardly any tweaking plus only Demo version & it sounded realy cool!! 8 min jam went by quickly!! I'll play around with the other stuff in time before I would actually purchase it but it definetly has lots of potential!! There are some free kits you can download for the demo as well. There is also a Forum for support & such much like this one. Looks like at least thus far this is going to be my non canned drum solution.

  • Yea, the demo song that comes with it is all hip-hop based, but there are some other songs that come with it that aren't. None of them are rock though.

Once I get my GNX4 in the mail (it'll be here this Friday) I'll do alittle something so you can hear what Fruity Loops sounds like without the hip-hop.

As I already know Fruity Loops and comfortable working with it I most likely won't be doing JamStix, but it does look quick for doing drum loops especially if that's all you're after. For me, I don't have anyone dying to play bass or anything else for that matter over my playing, so I just do it all.

I'd be interested in comparing a drum sequence on JamStix and Fruity Loops to hear the differences. If you're up for it let me know.

  • I actually enjoy writing drums. JamStix just interests me as another tool that could possible create something different. Personally, I prefer having full control over every hit.
If you need a bassist, I'd be happy to lay down some tracks. 8)
  • AC,
There are different modes in Jamstix. You can have full control and do all your own sequencing, and arangeing as you wish. You can also use other drum kits with samples and load there drum maps instead of Jamstix internal samples. You seem to have full control over about every parrameter & such as well. I'm telling you this progran from what I see is very awsome and worth a check out!! The demo is free & is limitted use over some things, there is one free drum pack as well. I would suggest to check it out!! If for nothing more to check the free jam out!! It's almost like having a real live drummer. I know your skeptical but check it out I think you'll like it!! As the moto goes \"just play with it\" here is the link:

    Happy drumming
I would also check the vid tutorials out before diddling. you have to download them though they don't stream??

    God Bless AC!!!

  • Hmm, seems like Groove Agent. Ya know, I was thinking it was more of a midi controller than a program. My mistake.
  • I never figured how to compose songs with this. The concept looks as simple as arranging rythms and fills in the song grid pane, but the stuff i assign always seems to change automagically on me.
  • grathan,
I've only played with the demo once but I still think you would need to put all things that make it feel like a real drummer Funkiness is one and there are other settings put to there minimum values and it should play more straight laced?? Give it A try. The only mode I've tried is Free Jam of demo so I have alot more digging to do!! Have you joined or asked over at there forum?? Looks like a pretty decent forum thus far lots of info that could posibly help you. Do you have the full version?? Have you watched all the vid tutorials?? I don't think I would have been able to do what I had accomplished without watching those, & refferncing the PDF manuel file. Anyhow hope you get that figured out!!

    God Bless!!

  • AC,
I could be wrong but: I believe it is both you can have it all midi controled as well??

  • No, i have a hacked version so i don't bother their forums. The song grid pane is one of the first things you discover when you look a lil deeper than the free jam.
  • Hey guys,

I just got this. After listening to you guys talk about it, I headed over to check it out. Blew me away.

One thing that took me a bit to figure out is there is two parts to their program. The Jamstix VST and the AudioM8 plug in.

I'm using Sonar 4 PE so I didn't have to get a VST wrapper. I just ran the Cakewalk VST Adapter 4 and it reconized Jamstix fine.

Basicly here's a quick low down on how to run it.

Start a new song in sonar and choose your BPM. Choose \"Insert\", \"DXi Synth\", \"VST\", \"Jamstix\" I choose all options on the pop up, you must choose between \"First or All Synth outputs\" either works.

Next get your guitar comming though a new audio track so you can hear it play in real time.

Here's the part that messed me up. In the FX box for this new track insert the AudioM8. You should then see the AudioM8 meter and it should move when you play your guitar.

This is what triggers the Jamstix to play with you. So if you start playing harder... it knows. If you start playing softer... it knows.

It's really pretty cool how good of a job this thing does. After you get a good jam in \"Free Jam\" switch it to \"Manual Jam\". It will remember everything it did in Free jam but now you can go in and tweek any part you didn't like.

I play guitar, not drums. For me this has always been the hardest part about recording, getting drums that didn't sound like they came out of a can. I have only had this program about 2 days now, but with just the small amount of playing with the program that I have had the chance to do... This is just the ticket for a guy like me!

Do check this out. I'm totally blown away!

  • Hey Killin Time,
Yeah it's pretty cool!! Espesially just to jam with. I still need to spend more time playing around with it before I would buy it. You know Jamstix version 2 is due out in Feb 2007. It is supposed to be much better than the current program, and all who buy Jamstix at current time up to the new release get free upgrade to Jamstix 2. Anyhow I'm with you Killin Time I hardly can play guitar I'm not a drummer I realy need a quick easy way to get great realistic non canned drums. Deffinetly worth a test drive of the free demo version to all.

Yea, the free upgrade was one of the things that sold me on buying it now.

Still getting my feet wet with the program. Have been playing around with some older stuff I had wrote in Sonar. Been muting the drums and changing my outputs so that I can have several tracks (rhy guitars, bass) going to one bus and then placing the AudioM8 in the effects bin for that bus. Then I route everything else to another bus and then bring it all together from there.

It amazes me how good this thing can do with so little time. Just putting it in Free Jam and playing with the settings a bit. Getting some very nice drums VERY FAST!

Do check it out for those who haven't. Once you get it working, it's very cool!

    IMHO
