Mangling the classics-TomPetty

Yes, the first in a long series of hideous covers. At least until I start writing again, which might be awhile since all my gear will soon be in storage for ??. Would you believe I recorded some even worse than this, too shameful to post??
Anyway, this masterpiece was recorded completely on the GNX4, 40 minutes from plugin to mixdown. I'm so proud. This is an old favorite of mine; it's the kinda song that allows me to imagine Elizabeth Hurley adoring me.

  • Shredd,
Great to hear from you!! This song was not bad at all!! Even sounded like petty!! Great Vocals. Anyhow sounds like no job as of yet?? I'll continue to keep you in my prayers, for a job & all. Hey hang in there this will pass!! & someday the losers will win!! The last will be first!! That time might be closer than we can all imagine!!

    God Bless you Shredd!!

Hey Eric, thanks for the kind words. Got a chance to drop in, so I'm hanging out while I can...
Thanks also for your prayers and good thoughts re: my job/housing sitch. It's going to take a while to wash out - they're going traveling for a while, and it looks like it'll all come down when they get back - but in the meantime, I'm making plans.
As far as my cover/mangling goes - I actually liked it too, considering I threw it together in about 20 minutes. I thought the playing was fine - I was going for sort of an \"unplugged\" sound - but I thought the vocals came out hideous. I had them nicely tweaked with a touch of echo and reverb and they sounded great, then none of the effects showed up in the mix, just like in the other vocal tune I posted, \"Hey\". I gotta figure that out...at least before I haveta put all my gear in storage!
Good to \"see\" you all - I'll be hanging around a few weeks til they get back. After that, who knows...I'm sure if it were legal, the Mrs would tie a rock around my neck and throw me in the river. Wench. :x
  • Shredd...
    Great cover tune, and mix..
    Vocal's were very Petty like..
    Dug it dude.. 8)
Don't forget where you stored your gear...

    See Ya buddy,
    Tal 8)
  • Glad y'all like it...Now that I've gotten some sleep, I'm gonna take another crack at it today and try to get the effects on the vocals to show up on the recording. They sound a lot better with...just ask Britney! :P
  • Good Job.

I thought the vocals were very good 8)

You guys are WAAAY too kind. I would lose a singing contest to Gilbert Godfried. I edited my opening post above with the new link. Check it out. I somehow got my gear to record my vocals with effects and not dry. Amazing how a little echo and reverb can improve a vocal. Right, Britney?? :P
  • Great job on the cover Shredd! 8) Yeah, I think you got Petty down. I like your \"unplugged\" version. I forgot all about this tune. Now I've got to dig up some of my wife's Petty cds. 8)
  • Not bad Shredd. I would like to hear this one with a better mix. Damn I feel old now.
  • Mark!!! Great to see ya back buddy! The mix-master has arrived. :D
