New e-violinist

Hi all,

Just got an electric violin a while back, and have been enjoying the GNX3.

Any other e-violinists hang out here?

  • The Charlie Daniels Band could benefit from your postings if you expand a little more on how it works.
  • Hi Zap,

I'm not quite sure I catch your drift. What does The Charlie Daniels Band have to do with this, and what are you refering to when you ask how \"it\" works?

  • Welcome! Not sure if there are many e-violinists but it's something that can add some style I'm sure. I like the Morse stuff and the EViolin is sweet!
  • welcome violectric!!
I sure would like to hear that thing! Do you think you could post a tune sometime? :)

    Welcome, vioelectric.

Substitute(Charlie Daniels, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) any group you know that plays electric violin.

Maybe I'm assuming way too much but I thought you are playing your electric violin through your GNX3. If so, how is the outcome? Charlie Daniels does not use a GNX that I've seen.
  • Yeah,

I'd like to post a sample, although I am new to the site, and have to figure out just how to do that. Can you point me in the right direction?

    Zap:

Being new to the electronic world, I bought the GNX3 as an affordable place to start experimenting - both with different effects / sounds as well as looping. I'm just getting started with trying different sounds, and am having alot of fun though with them - each one calls forth a unique kind of playing response, so that feels very different after playing accoustic violin for so many years, and just having one \"sound\" to work with.

The next \"sound\" I am after is to get something that has an East Indian kind of flavour - not sure quite even where to start on that, which is why I posted a question in another part of this forum.

Also, I am finding the looper to be alot of fun, as well as a great compositional tool. Havn't mastered it enough to use it in a performance setting, but I think I'm getting closer.

    Thats where I'm at . . .
  • ok what you have to do is take a song/sample and convert it to mp3.( you don't have to but it uploads much faster). Save it to your puter and note where it is.
Next hit the gnx3 circle at the top of the page.
next hit the member musiclink at the leftside of the page.
next hit the upload button at the top and browse for it on your puter.

yeah let us know when youve posted it by starting a thred in the member music forum.

    any problems let us know
    take care
  • This is too cool......just looked on ebay and found that eviolins generally are not that expensive. Can any one enlighten me (us) on the types, manufacturers, capabiilities and / or drawbacks of using these instruments through processors like the GNX4 ? I wanna get one.

There's a number of factors to consider:

    1. Have you ever played the violin?

    2. What kind of music style do you want to play?

    3. How fussy are you about \"sound\"?

    4. What is your budget?

With answers to these questions I can probably give you a decent info.

    Cheers,

  • There's a number of factors to consider:

    1. Have you ever played the violin?

Had a few fiddles over the years for meatball improvisations actually....bluegrass, country...no formal training other than grade school/jr. high cello, but I can saw on the sucker in my own untrained way that's not too terrible.

    2. What kind of music style do you want to play?

I want to play and sound like Jean-Luc !!! LOL...

    3. How fussy are you about \"sound\"?

\"Sound\" depends on placement in the composition canvas. I'd use an eviolin as a subtlety, blended for effect, not as an out front instrument. Not looking for an 18th century Gagliano for sure.

    4. What is your budget?

Can a $200 violin satisfy my meager needs, or is a jump to $500 a necessity ? Any advisements will be appreciated....

  • I uploaded a song. You can check it out under \"Into the Blue\" by Violectric in the GNX3 music section.

Any and all feedback welcome :)

Good stuff. Most people underestimate just how hard this crazy instrument is to play!

If you are using heavy effects (distortion), then the quality of the instrument isn't as important. But the closer you want it to actually sound like a violin means you will need to spend more.

In my opinion, you will need to purchase at least a ~ $500 instrument (eg. Fender - which you might get for $250 - 350) if you want to be happy for more than a month. Even those instruments don't have the greatest reputation. Anything less than that and you're likely to get plastic parts which don't work and don't last. Also, if you want anything like a real violin sound, you will need a decent pre-amp (and an eq is also helpfull).

For a ton of helpfull info - and a few more opinions - check out Fiddleforum. I got alot of help from the guys over there . . . and you can PM my when push comes to shove . . .
