Nope my real name is not Tal.. :shock: ..
I have chosen this User name to honor my favorite guitarist of all time..
Talmage Holt Farlow.. (AKA Tal)...
So when you see my signature Tal Rules I am referring to the baddest jazz guitar player (IMHO) of all time. NOT giving myself props.. :lol:

I own almost every recording this gentle giant of a man ever made, plus several of his DVD's that he made late in his life.

Just a humble good natured country boy from Greensboro, North Carolina. The man didn't even start playing until he was 20 years old and within 2 years he's touring the country with the Red Norvo trio and playing some of the most blazingly fast, tasty jazz guitar probably ever played. 8)

At the height of his success, he just leaves the jazz scene buys a house on the New Jersey coast and takes up the profession of sign painter. Still picked with a few select students and friends for years. Painted signs and fished from his dock in his backyard.. :shock:

Club owners in NYC begged him to come play but he never did until very late in his life. He much prefereed hanging around the house and pickn' and fishin' than the limelight. 8)

Clip 1 is an introduction by none other than George Benson followed by a photographic collage with Tal playing in the background, with the Red Norvo trio. Just tearing it up.

Clip 2 is an interview with Tal..

Clip 3 is a jam in Tal's living room with Tommy Flannigan..

Clip 4 is Tal and the great guitarist Lenny Breau, clowning around and pickn'.

    That's cool!! Somehow I knew that's were your screen name came from. Not sure if it was from another thread or something?? Anyhow I will deffinetly check those vids out!! Thats one thing being part of this community has done is introduced me to so many great guitar players that I just never was exposed to or new of?? Man you think Tal got started late?? I started for real at age 30, almost 4 years ago now. I asure you I'm no Tal either one!! But I've given the rest of my days to grow musically and Glorify God with this wonderfull gift of music!! God is so creative & to me I feel so alive when I'm in my feeble attempts creating music. I feel like I'm finaly doing what I was created to do, & it puts a smile on God's face?? Anyhow That's how I feel. Thanks for posting this Tal God Bless you!!

    Thanks for the info and links Tal. I really enjoyed the Lenny Breau bit. My instructor was a jazz guy and he got me to listen to just about jazz guitar playing I could find. Tal was excellent. I got really into George Benson (around the time of the Body Talk album, before he started all the singing stuff.)

    I have to admit being only a few miles from Greensboro it's a shame I have never heard of this guitar player. Though I'm not into jazz I can certainly appreciate the quality of music that was produced by Tal and others in the genre. What great exposure to different forms of music 8)

    I'd like to see more of his story. very interesting.

    to walk away from a fruitful career in music---I could understand how the scene would get old and the longing for a normal life would be calling.

    Tal was the ultimate in cool... 8)

    Another of my favorites from that era is Johnny Smith..
    Similar story to Tal's..Just walked away from the jazz scene at the height of his career to open a music store in Colorado Springs.

    Gave it all up to raise his daughter.. 8) .
    When asked if he ever missed NYC and the jazz scene, his response..
    \"My best memory of NYC was watching if fade out of sight in my rear view mirror when I headed to Colorado\". :lol: ..

    (Sorry New Yorkers...You've got a great town and I enjoy my visits there..That's Johnny talking not me...)... :lol:

    Elderly just got one in - $7000. It looks very cool. The tight scroll cutaway is a very nice touch.

    The original 60's vintage models are quite pricey. Gibson did a reissue of this guitar a few years back and I've seen the reissues go for as little as $2500..
    Here's a reissuie with a buy it now price of $3300 or best offer. 8)
