Brighter Side of the Moon

This is an original by a fella named Benji (http://www.myspace.com/benjitunes). He recorded the song freeform playing guitar and singing simultaneously. My son added the harmonica part. I then used the Sonar \"Fit Improvisation\" feature to get the necessary tempo changes added so I could drop some midi drum loops in it. Finally, I added a bass part.
You can tell where he speeded up and slowed down but what I'm really interested in is the mix. I feel the bass is kinda muddy and I don't know if it's my bass, my playing technique, or a problem in the mix itself.
I recorded this on my HP laptop using Sonar 5. My GNX-3000 served as both midi and audio interface.

You're right..The tempo changes are pretty obvious.
Bass playin' sound pretty good. Might experiment with the tone control on the bass. Might want to crank it up and get the bass line a little more bright.

I agree cool little tune there!! I think you did an awsome job with the Harmonica part. I know I have crappy speakers here!! BUT: You said you played a baseline?? I heard no Bass at all. I like Harmonica. There is a guy at my Church who plays from time to time. Pretty much older Hymes but I must say it is always interesting to see him play!! Good Job!!!
God Bless!!!

Partch, my son played the harmonica. He was 12 at the time and had only been taking lessons for 2 months
Benji actually did play with a click track (just the standard 1/4 rimshot). He couldn't stay with it at all. I've found that it's easier to stay with an actual drum track so I might see if we can get him to lay it down again, using the drum track I arranged for the song.
I'm actually amazed at how well the fit improvisation feature worked, allowing me to drop midi drum loops on top of a song with tempo variations like that.
BTW, the drum loops were were from the old DrumTrax library which is a midi library of drum loops played by hand. I played them through the Cakewalk TTS-1 softsynth that came with Sonar 5, using the general midi drum patch.
