Good books and Dvds to teach theory and speed

Hi,

What are good books and dvds for teaching theory and speed, speed and theory doesnt have to be on the same Dvd.I remember reading this interview with trivium and Matt says he learnt all his theory from a Dvd by John petrucci i think, is there any Dvds by him that would help me?

I dont want to technical, i know all the notes on the fretboard, the pentatonic scale, and a few others.

  • Wickerman,
I don't know if this would be to deep for you or not?? It's 20 dollar book called Fretboard Logic SE. I got it at Musicians Friend online. I don't think it was to deep for me as a beginner with no training. But it has been very enlightening guitar focused theory!! Anyhow sometimes I feel like a salesperson for the author Bill Edwards!! BUT: it just has been that good in my opinion!!

    God Bless Wickerman!!!

  • I recently bought this DVD lesson from Doug Doppler. He recently opened a European tour for Gilby Clarke. He is a former student of Joe Satriani.

What is specail about Doug, is he communicates with you also through email. I kid you not! He considers you a student. I got lots of extra help from Doug this way.

at the site...click on TITLES...scroll to video clips...and you can see portions of the DVD.

    Also look at his website.

  • Hi Wickerman the John Petrucci DVD you are referring to is called Rock Discipline and has been invaluable in the progress of both me and my son. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  • Troy Stetina - Speed Mechanics For Lead Guitar
    John Petrucci - Rock Discipline

  • Wickerman,
Basic Teaching- Guitars Tuning Explanation of why EADGBe, 5 Basic Chord Forms in CAGED SEQUENCE, More Advanced Chords, Scales, Modes, Lead Patterns In Caged Sequence. Some pretty Basic but good Music Theory. And Lastly the more advanced Arpegios and extravegent scales. Keep in mind SE book is taught without realy no emphasis on what your style is. This is info for all styles. Styles are took up in the final book and instructional DVD part 3, which I do not have but when I feel I've pretty much mastered and am compfortable with this material not just in head but in practical usage I will get book 3 & DVD and look into the different styles. Anyhow wickerman I'm telling you for 20 bucks you won't be disapointed if your srerious and want to learn!! The layout of the Workbook is very condusive to all learning styles and very easy to follow!!!

    God Bless!!!

  • wickerman---that petrucci vid has some fingering exercises and picking techs that are very good. THE guy is amazing and a good humble teacher.
  • Hey Wickerman,

If you want a sample of the Petrucci DVD go to Google video and you
can see the lesson part it.
Also Marty Freidman-Melodic Control is a good one too.
  • Troy Stetina - Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar (book + CD)
  • I've found speed comes without specifically trying for it. Learn the scales everywhere and practise them.
    Challenge yourself.
Wickerman i do believe you said you were 13... i'm 17 and didnt really challenge myself until i was bout 14/15, now i can Yngwie/Vai!!
(ps i'm seeing him on nov. 15th - hes in Sydney!)
  • Why do you wanna get any faster? I did a search and found you doin' pretty dang fast already.

    WICKERMAN RULES here
  • lol :D you know that is not me right? you were just joking cos were both leftys, i wish i could play as fast as that guy.
  • Yeah.. I was just cracking funny...but I liked the thought of you someday with skills like this fellow. He is a lefty playing a guitar that I know you want, and appears to be in his teens. This guy really has a gift...I thought.

I do feel also that you will become an awesome guitarist, from the ability you already show. You have a \"gift\" too, and I can imagine you going places with it. Not many of us have those blessings, and a whole life infront of us for the taking.

I am constantly amazed at the level of skills many guitarists have these days. We always had tremendously skilled guitarists. They were just more far and few between, only just 30 years ago.
  • Yeah that guy is good.Hey i noticed that guitar was an Ibanez, i would be grateful if u could tell me what model it is?

I realise that the rg1570 comes left handed in the prestige range apart from that there all the \"budget\" ones.
